What is Cambridge O Level and who takes it in Pakistan?

Cambridge O Level is an internationally recognised qualification for students aged about 14 to 16, set and marked by Cambridge International Education. In Pakistan, Cambridge O Level is the main alternative to Matric (SSC). Cambridge says it is equivalent to Cambridge IGCSE grade for grade, and students usually take it over two years before A Level or FSc.

Cambridge offers more than 40 O Level subjects, and schools combine them to build their own curriculum. Each syllabus is designed around roughly 130 guided learning hours, according to Cambridge's syllabus documents, although the time a student actually needs varies. On certificates, the qualification appears as GCE O Level.

O Level is not offered everywhere. Cambridge does not offer O Level exams in administrative zones 1, 2 and 6, and it is moving selected subjects to IGCSE in zones 3 and 5 from June 2028. Pakistan is in administrative zone 4, where Cambridge has said O Levels will continue. If you are weighing the two qualifications, our guide to IGCSE vs O Level covers the differences.

How is O Level different from Matric?

O Level and Matric are both secondary qualifications, but they are awarded by different bodies. Cambridge O Level is set by Cambridge International and reported as letter grades from A* to E. Matric (SSC) is awarded by Pakistani boards such as FBISE and the provincial BISEs and reported in marks. O Level results need IBCC equivalence for Pakistani admissions.

Neither route is automatically better; it depends on the school, budget and future plans. We compare the two routes in depth in O Level vs Matric.

Which O Level subjects are compulsory in Pakistan?

For students who sit O Level from Pakistan, IBCC requires eight subjects for Matric equivalence: English, Mathematics, Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies, plus three academic electives, each passed with at least grade E. Students who sit their exams abroad need five subjects instead: English, Mathematics and three electives, according to IBCC's rules for British qualifications.

Cambridge itself does not make any subject compulsory; the list comes from IBCC, because most Pakistani students need an equivalence certificate later. The syllabus codes below are taken from the Cambridge June 2026 zone 4 timetable.

Your school will tell you whether to take First Language Urdu (3247) or Second Language Urdu (3248). Both are on the zone 4 timetable.

Which O Level subjects should you choose for medicine, engineering or business?

O Level electives should match the route you may want after A Level or FSc. For the IBCC Science group, students need Physics, Chemistry and one of Biology, Computer Science, IT or ICT, and IBCC states that Biology is mandatory for anyone heading towards medicine. Business-minded students often choose Economics, Business Studies or Accounting.

Planned routeSuggested electives (O Level code)Why
Pre-MedicalPhysics 5054, Chemistry 5070, Biology 5090Meets the IBCC Science group; Biology is mandatory for medicine
Pre-EngineeringPhysics 5054, Chemistry 5070, plus Biology 5090 or Computer Science 2210Meets the IBCC Science group; Additional Mathematics 4037 is a useful extra before A Level Maths
Computer SciencePhysics 5054, Chemistry 5070, Computer Science 2210Meets the IBCC Science group with a computing focus
Business and humanitiesEconomics 2281, Business Studies 7115, Accounting 7707 or Sociology 2251Leads naturally to A Level Economics, Business or Accounting; places the student in the IBCC Arts group

IBCC places students who do not meet the Science group requirements in the Arts group. If you are undecided between medicine, engineering and other routes, keeping Physics, Chemistry and Biology open is the safest choice.

How do you register for O Level as a private candidate in Pakistan?

Private candidates in Pakistan usually register for Cambridge O Level through the British Council Pakistan, which handles entries for students who cannot enter through a school. Cambridge says the British Council works with it to support private candidates, and that candidates can also use an approved Cambridge exam centre that accepts private entries.

According to the British Council's guidance for private candidates, registration has two parts: completing the online entry on its School Registration System (SRS) and paying the exam fees. The process in practice looks like this:

  1. Choose your series (June or November) and subjects, and check that each syllabus is open to private candidates. Cambridge lists this in each syllabus document.
  2. Create an account and enter your subjects on the British Council's online registration system.
  3. Pay the exam fee for each subject. Your entry is not complete until the fees are paid, so pay before the deadline for the stage you registered in.
  4. Submit any requested documents and keep your confirmation and statement of entry safe.

The British Council sets its own registration windows and fees in Pakistani rupees for each series. We have not quoted figures here because they change every series. Check the current dates and price list on the British Council Pakistan registration page before you plan. Our step-by-step guide to private candidate registration in Pakistan goes into more detail.

When are O Level exams held and when are results announced?

Cambridge O Level exams run in two series a year: June and November. Results for Cambridge O Level arrive in mid-August for the June series and mid-January for the November series. For the current cycle, Cambridge will release November 2026 O Level results on 14 January 2027 at 06:00 UK time.

Pakistan sits the zone 4 timetable, so always download the zone 4 version from Cambridge or the British Council rather than a timetable for another region. Recent dates published by Cambridge give a useful guide:

How is O Level graded?

Cambridge O Level is graded A*, A, B, C, D and E, with A* the highest grade and E the lowest pass. A performance below grade E is reported as "Ungraded" on the statement of results but does not appear on the certificate. Cambridge awards one grade per subject, based on the total across all papers in that syllabus.

There is no fixed percentage for an A*. Cambridge sets grade thresholds for every syllabus after marking each series and publishes them as grade threshold tables. Thresholds move slightly between series because some papers turn out harder than others, and adjusting the raw mark keeps the standard of each grade the same from year to year.

Use thresholds as a guide, not a target. Our O Level grade boundaries page explains how to read the tables.

Do you need IBCC equivalence after O Level?

Yes, most students who stay in Pakistan need IBCC equivalence after O Level. The Inter Boards Coordination Commission converts O Level grades into Matric (SSC) marks, which Pakistani colleges, universities and employers use to compare applicants. You also need SSC equivalence before joining FSc or FA after O Level.

IBCC's conversion table turns each grade into fixed marks out of 100: an A is worth 85, a B 75, a C 65, a D 55 and an E 45. An A* is worth more than 90, with the exact value set subject by subject for each session. IBCC's equivalence FAQs confirm that an O Level student can move on to FSc or FA once they hold an SSC equivalence certificate. Our full guide to IBCC equivalence for O and A Level covers the conversion table, exemptions and the application process. How should you plan two years of O Level study?

A two-year Cambridge O Level course works best when the first year builds subject knowledge and the second year turns that knowledge into exam performance. The plan below assumes a student sitting all subjects in a June series, but the same shape works for a November entry or for subjects taken a year early.

A simple plan many families find workable:

  • Year 1, first term: settle subject choices against the IBCC rules above, get the current syllabus for each code, and build steady weekly study habits.
  • Year 1, second term: finish the core content in the sciences and maths, and start topic-by-topic past-paper questions.
  • Year 2, first term: complete all content and sit a full mock under timed conditions in each subject.
  • Year 2, second term: move to full past papers every week, mark them with official mark schemes and redo the questions you lose marks on.
  • Final eight weeks: focus on timing, command words and the weakest topics, not new material.

Frequently asked questions

How many subjects are compulsory in O Level?

Five O Level subjects are compulsory for students who sit their exams in Pakistan: English, Mathematics, Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies. These come from IBCC's rules for Matric equivalence, not from Cambridge. Students also need three academic electives, making eight subjects in total, each passed with at least grade E. Students who sit abroad need only five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

Is O Level recognised in Pakistan?

Yes, Cambridge O Level is recognised in Pakistan through IBCC equivalence. The Inter Boards Coordination Commission converts O Level grades into Matric (SSC) marks, and the equivalence certificate is required for admission to local colleges and universities and for employment. With SSC equivalence, an O Level student can join A Level, FSc or FA programmes in Pakistan.

What is the O Level fee at the British Council?

The British Council Pakistan sets its own O Level exam fee for each subject and each series, so the figure changes every year. Fees are charged per subject in Pakistani rupees, and the entry is complete only once they are paid. Check the current price list on the British Council Pakistan website before registering, as figures from earlier series will be out of date.

When will O Level results be announced in 2027?

Cambridge will release November 2026 O Level results on 14 January 2027 at 06:00 UK time, which is 11:00 in Pakistan. Results for the June 2027 series are expected in mid-August 2027; for comparison, June 2026 O Level results came out on 18 August 2026. Cambridge confirms each exact date in its key dates documents for the series.

What is the highest grade in O Level?

A* is the highest grade in Cambridge O Level, and E is the lowest pass. The full scale is A*, A, B, C, D and E; a result below E is reported as Ungraded on the statement of results and does not appear on the certificate. There is no fixed A* percentage, because Cambridge sets grade thresholds after marking each series.

Can I do FSc after O Level?

Yes, you can join FSc after O Level once you hold an SSC equivalence certificate from IBCC. IBCC's own FAQs confirm that O Level students can pursue FSc or FA after obtaining equivalence. For Pre-Medical or Pre-Engineering, make sure your O Level subjects meet the IBCC Science group: Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Computer Science, with Biology mandatory for medicine.

Is O Level being replaced by IGCSE in Pakistan?

No, O Level is not being replaced by IGCSE in Pakistan at present. Pakistan is in Cambridge administrative zone 4, and Cambridge has stated that it will continue to run O Levels there. The planned move from selected O Level subjects to IGCSE, starting in June 2028, applies to schools in administrative zones 3 and 5.
