Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL)
Diploma students usually take three subjects at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. HL courses have more content and longer exams, and many university courses ask for specific HL subjects and grades, such as HL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches for engineering or HL Chemistry for medicine.
Choosing the right combination early matters, so check university requirements before finalising subject levels.
Internal Assessment (IA) and the Extended Essay (EE)
Most IB subjects include an Internal Assessment, such as a maths exploration or a science investigation, marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB. The Extended Essay is an independent research paper of up to 4,000 words.
Our tutors help students understand the assessment criteria, plan their work and improve their own drafts. The work must remain the student's own; we do not write IAs or essays for students, in line with IB academic integrity policy.
Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
TOK asks students to think about how we know what we claim to know. It is assessed through an exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title. Students often find the style unfamiliar, so tutoring focuses on building clear arguments, using real examples and linking ideas across subjects.
Predicted grades and university applications
Universities usually make offers based on IB predicted grades from the school, which are set during the final year. Strong performance in internal assessments, mock exams and classwork feeds into these predictions. Tutoring through Year 1 and early Year 2 can help students build the understanding that supports a realistic predicted grade.
When are IB exams and how are they graded?
May session
Exams run from late April to May; results are released in early July.
Taken by most schools, including those in the Gulf, Pakistan, the UK and North America.
November session
Exams run in November; results are released in mid-December (16 December for the 2024 and 2025 sessions).
Mainly used by schools in the southern hemisphere and for some retakes.
How IB is graded
Each Diploma subject is graded from 1 to 7, giving up to 42 points from six subjects. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are graded A to E and combine to give up to 3 further points, for a maximum of 45. A minimum of 24 points is needed for the Diploma, along with other conditions, including completing CAS. MYP subjects are also graded 1 to 7.
How does online IB tutoring work?
Diagnostic
A short check of what your child already knows against the syllabus.
Topic teaching
Clear explanations on a shared whiteboard, one topic at a time.
Past-paper practice
Exam questions from your board, timed and marked to the mark scheme.
Feedback
What went well, what to fix and what to practise before next class.
IB tutoring suits Diploma students balancing six subjects with the core, students moving into the IB from another curriculum, and MYP students who want a stronger foundation before the Diploma. We support students in the Gulf, Pakistan, the UK, Canada, the USA and Australia, scheduling lessons around school hours and time zones. Guidance on the IA and EE always respects the IB's academic integrity rules.

IB questions parents ask
What is the IB Diploma?
The IB Diploma is a two-year programme for students aged 16 to 19, set by the International Baccalaureate Organization. Students take six subjects, usually three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. The Diploma is scored out of 45 and recognised by universities worldwide.
What is a good IB score?
A good IB score depends on the universities a student is aiming for, since each course publishes its own requirement. The Diploma needs at least 24 points out of 45, and selective university courses often ask for considerably more, sometimes with specific HL grades. Checking each course's published entry requirements is the most reliable guide.
Can you help with the IB Internal Assessment and Extended Essay?
Yes, our tutors help students understand the criteria, choose a workable research question, plan their approach and improve their own drafts. The IA and Extended Essay must be the student's own work under IB academic integrity rules, so we guide and give feedback but never write any part of them for the student.
What is the difference between IB SL and HL?
Higher Level subjects cover more content in greater depth than Standard Level, with more teaching hours and longer exams. Both are graded 1 to 7. Diploma students usually take three HL and three SL subjects. Many universities ask for particular HL subjects, so level choices should be checked against entry requirements.
When are IB results released?
IB results for the May session are released in early July, and results for the November session are released in mid-December; the IB moved the November release to 16 December from the 2024 session. Students access them through the IB candidate website using details provided by their school. The IB publishes exact release dates and times for each session on its website.
Do you tutor IB MYP students?
Yes, we tutor students in the IB Middle Years Programme, usually in Mathematics, the sciences and English. MYP work is assessed against subject criteria graded 1 to 7, and tutoring can help students understand what each criterion asks for. Many families also use MYP tutoring to prepare for the jump to the Diploma Programme.
