Facts last verified:

O Level Physics suits students considering engineering, computer science, architecture or the physical sciences, and it is usually studied alongside Chemistry and Mathematics. The syllabus has six areas: motion, forces and energy; thermal physics; waves; electricity and magnetism; nuclear physics; and space physics. It assumes confident algebra, so students who struggle to rearrange equations often find Physics harder than it needs to be, which is why our tutors check maths skills early.

Under the current syllabus, for exams in 2026 to 2028, there are three components. Paper 1 is a 1-hour multiple-choice paper of 40 questions worth 30%. Paper 2 is a 1 hour 45 minute theory paper of short and structured questions worth 80 marks and 50%. The remaining 20% is either Paper 3, a laboratory practical test, or Paper 4, a written Alternative to Practical. Many students, including private candidates, take Paper 4, so practical skills are practised on paper.

The topics students most often find difficult are moments, momentum, electromagnetic induction, circuits with combined resistors, and decay equations and half-life. Explaining phenomena in precise words also costs marks, particularly in thermal physics and waves. O Level Physics leads directly into A Level Physics, where mechanics, electricity and waves return with more mathematics, so secure habits with units, graphs and rearranging equations now save a great deal of time later.

What topics are in O Level Physics?

The full syllabus, with the spots where students most often lose marks.
  1. 1

    Motion: speed, velocity and acceleration

Reading the gradient of a distance–time graph as acceleration, and not using the area under a speed–time graph for distance.

  2. 2

    Mass, weight, density and forces

Confusing mass with weight, and forgetting that the resultant force, not any single force, sets the acceleration.

  3. 3

    Moments, momentum and pressure

Using a distance that is not perpendicular to the force when taking moments, and dropping the sign of momentum.

  4. 4

    Energy, work and power

Vague descriptions of energy stores and transfers, and mixing efficiency as a fraction and as a percentage.

  5. 5

    Thermal physics

Describing particle behaviour vaguely, and using specific heat capacity where latent heat is needed.

  6. 6

    Waves, light and sound

Bending refracted rays to the wrong side of the normal and mixing up frequency and wavelength in the wave equation.

  7. 7

    Electricity and circuits

Treating current as 'used up' around a series circuit and combining parallel resistors incorrectly.

  8. 8

    Magnetism and electromagnetic effects

Applying the wrong hand rule, and not stating that induction needs a changing magnetic field.

  9. 9

    Nuclear physics

Unbalanced nucleon and proton numbers in decay equations, and miscounting half-lives from a decay graph.

  10. 10

    Space physics

Vague answers on the life cycle of stars, and treating a light-year as a unit of time rather than distance.

How do you get top marks in O Level Physics?

  • In Paper 1, work out your own answer before reading the options; wrong options are often built from common slips such as forgetting to square a value.

  • In Paper 2 calculations, write the equation, substitute values with units, then give the answer with its unit; each stage can earn credit.

  • Match explanations to the marks: a 3-mark 'explain' normally needs three separate physics points.

  • For Paper 4, practise results tables with units in the column headings, sensible graph scales and a single best-fit line rather than joining the dots.

  • Learn the standard experiments, such as density, specific heat capacity, refraction and resistance, well enough to plan one in an unfamiliar setting.

  • Convert units (g to kg, cm to m, minutes to seconds, kJ to J) before substituting; unit slips are among the easiest marks to lose.

O Level Physics FAQs

How many papers are there in O Level Physics 5054?

O Level Physics 5054 has three components: Paper 1 Multiple Choice (1 hour, 40 marks, 30%), Paper 2 Theory (1 hour 45 minutes, 80 marks, 50%) and one practical paper worth 20%. The practical is either Paper 3, a laboratory test, or Paper 4, a written Alternative to Practical. These details apply to the syllabus for 2026, 2027 and 2028.

Is O Level Physics hard?

O Level Physics is demanding mainly because it combines conceptual understanding with calculations and precise written explanation. Students who are comfortable rearranging equations and who practise past-paper questions regularly usually find it manageable. Electricity, electromagnetism and multi-step calculations are the hardest parts for many learners, so our classes give these extra worked examples.

How can I get an A* in O Level Physics?

An A* in O Level Physics depends on secure understanding of every topic, accurate calculations with units, and strong practical-paper technique. Learn definitions precisely, practise explaining phenomena in exam language and complete timed past papers under exam conditions. Most improvement comes from reviewing each mistake against the mark scheme. Our tutors support this process, but no one can guarantee a grade.

What is the Alternative to Practical paper in O Level Physics?

The Alternative to Practical is Paper 4 of O Level Physics 5054, a 1-hour written paper worth 40 marks and 20% of the grade. It tests experimental skills on paper: reading instruments, recording results, plotting graphs, spotting sources of error and planning investigations. Students take it instead of the laboratory-based Paper 3, so regular practice with real experiment write-ups pays off.

Can I take Physics without Chemistry in O Level?

Yes, you can take O Level Physics without Chemistry, because Cambridge does not require a particular combination of science subjects. Your future plans matter, though: engineering routes usually expect Physics and Mathematics, while medicine needs Chemistry and Biology. Some schools also fix their science groups, so check your school's options and your intended A Level subjects first.

What topics are in O Level Physics 5054?

O Level Physics 5054 covers six topic areas: motion, forces and energy; thermal physics; waves; electricity and magnetism; nuclear physics; and space physics. Within these, students study speed and acceleration, momentum, pressure, energy transfers, thermal properties, light and sound, circuits, electromagnetic effects, radioactivity, and the Solar System and stars. Any topic can appear on any paper.
