Facts last verified:

O Level Mathematics (Syllabus D) is one of the core O Level subjects in Pakistan and is widely taken by Pakistani-curriculum students in the Gulf. A secure grade keeps every A Level route open, from sciences to economics. The syllabus has nine topic areas: number, algebra and graphs, coordinate geometry, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, transformations and vectors, probability, and statistics. Cambridge does not set them in a teaching order, so questions regularly combine ideas from two or three areas at once.

The current syllabus was revised for first examination in 2025 and uses two papers of equal weight. Each lasts 2 hours and carries 100 marks. Paper 1 is non-calculator, while Paper 2 requires a scientific calculator. Both mix short structured items with longer unstructured problems in which the student has to choose the method. Older past papers remain useful practice, but timings and mark totals differ, so we adapt them to the current format when setting timed work.

The areas that most often hold students back are multi-step word problems, vectors, complete descriptions of transformations, and mensuration questions that mix units. The non-calculator paper exposes weak fraction, percentage and standard-form arithmetic. Looking ahead, A Level Mathematics relies on fluent algebra, indices, quadratics, graphs and trigonometry, so we treat those as long-term priorities. Students who enjoy the subject often add Additional Mathematics 4037 to ease the jump to A Level.

What topics are in O Level Maths?

The full syllabus, with the spots where students most often lose marks.
  1. 1

    Number

Rounding too early in multi-step calculations and giving answers to the wrong number of significant figures.

  2. 2

    Algebra and graphs

Sign errors when expanding brackets or rearranging formulae, and drawing curves as joined-up straight lines.

  3. 3

    Coordinate geometry

Inverting the gradient formula and not giving the equation of a line in the form the question asks for.

  4. 4

    Geometry

Stating angle facts without the correct reason, such as writing 'alternate' without naming the parallel lines.

  5. 5

    Mensuration

Mixing units (cm and m, cm² and m²) and using the wrong surface-area formula for cones and cylinders.

  6. 6

    Trigonometry

Choosing the sine rule where the cosine rule is needed, and misreading three-figure bearings.

  7. 7

    Transformations and vectors

Incomplete descriptions, such as a rotation without its centre or an enlargement without its scale factor.

  8. 8

    Probability

Treating 'without replacement' as 'with replacement' on tree diagrams, and adding probabilities that should be multiplied.

  9. 9

    Statistics

Using class boundaries instead of midpoints to estimate a mean, and confusing frequency with frequency density.

How do you get top marks in O Level Maths?

  • On Paper 1, write down every arithmetic step: method marks are available even when the final answer is wrong, but only if the working is on the page.

  • On Paper 2, keep full calculator values in intermediate steps and round only the final answer to the accuracy the question asks for.

  • With 100 marks in 2 hours, aim for a little over a minute per mark and move on from any 2-mark part that is taking ten minutes.

  • Read the last line of each question twice: 'in standard form', 'to the nearest degree' and 'in its simplest form' are easy marks to throw away.

  • Practise non-calculator fractions, percentages, standard form and estimation every week, because they appear across many Paper 1 topics.

  • Bring a sharp pencil, ruler, protractor and compasses; graphs and constructions are marked for accuracy.

O Level Maths FAQs

How many papers are there in O Level Maths 4024?

There are two papers in O Level Mathematics 4024, each lasting 2 hours and worth 100 marks, so each counts for 50% of the grade. Paper 1 is non-calculator and Paper 2 requires a scientific calculator. Either paper can test any of the nine topic areas, so students need to be comfortable with every topic both with and without a calculator.

How can I get an A* in O Level Maths?

Students who reach an A* in O Level Maths usually combine secure knowledge of every topic with plenty of timed past-paper practice. In practice that means fixing weak topics early, rehearsing non-calculator methods until they are automatic, and checking every lost mark against the mark scheme. Our tutors build that routine into weekly classes, although no tutor can honestly promise a particular grade.

Is O Level Maths hard?

O Level Maths is challenging but very achievable for students who practise regularly, because the questions reward clear method and accuracy more than tricks. Most difficulty comes from multi-step problems, vectors and the non-calculator paper. Students who leave revision until the final months often struggle with the volume of content, so steady practice from the start of the course makes a real difference.

What is the difference between O Level Maths and Additional Maths?

O Level Mathematics 4024 covers broad core mathematics, while Additional Mathematics 4037 is a separate, more advanced qualification focused on algebra, functions, trigonometry and calculus. Additional Maths is optional, but it helps students planning A Level Mathematics, Physics or engineering routes because it introduces differentiation and integration early. Many students take both in the same exam series.

Can I use a calculator in O Level Maths?

You can use a scientific calculator in Paper 2 of O Level Mathematics 4024, but calculators are not allowed in Paper 1. The current two-paper format applies to exams from 2025, so older past papers have different timings and mark totals. They are still worth practising, provided you time yourself against the current format and identify which questions you can do by hand.

When are O Level Maths exams held?

O Level Mathematics 4024 is examined in the May/June and October/November series every year. Results are typically released in mid-August for the June series and in mid-January for the November series. Exact paper dates depend on your Cambridge administrative zone, so check the timetable for your country on the Cambridge website or ask us when you book a trial class.
