Facts last verified:
IGCSE Mathematics is a core subject in British-curriculum international schools across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the wider Gulf, and it is also sat by private candidates and international-school students elsewhere. The two main versions are Cambridge 0580 and Pearson Edexcel 4MA1. Both are tiered, so the decision between Core and Extended (Cambridge) or Foundation and Higher (Edexcel) directly limits the grades a student can reach, and it deserves a careful conversation with the school.
For Cambridge 0580, Core candidates sit Papers 1 and 3, each 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, while Extended candidates sit Papers 2 and 4, each 2 hours and 100 marks. In both tiers the first paper is non-calculator and the second needs a calculator. Edexcel 4MA1 uses two 2-hour papers of 100 marks in each tier, with a calculator allowed in both. Each board supplies a formula list, but students still have to recognise which result applies.
The topics that most often separate grades are algebraic fractions, rearranging formulae, functions, vectors, circle theorems, and the harder statistics such as histograms and cumulative frequency. Extended and Higher papers also expect multi-step reasoning with little scaffolding. Students aiming for A Level Mathematics or IB Mathematics should take the Extended or Higher tier and may want to add Additional Mathematics 0606 to build fluency in algebra and early calculus before sixth form.

What topics are in IGCSE Maths?
- 1
Number
Mishandling upper and lower bounds, and rounding intermediate values so the final answer loses accuracy.
- 2
Algebra and graphs
Sign errors when simplifying algebraic fractions, and giving quadratic solutions to the wrong accuracy.
- 3
Coordinate geometry
Finding the perpendicular gradient incorrectly and leaving a line equation in a form the question did not ask for.
- 4
Geometry
Quoting circle theorems loosely when the reason needs the precise wording.
- 5
Mensuration
Using a diameter where a radius is needed and forgetting faces when finding total surface area.
- 6
Trigonometry
Rounding an angle mid-calculation, and using right-angled methods on triangles that are not right-angled.
- 7
Transformations and vectors
Leaving vector paths unsimplified and omitting the line of a reflection or the vector of a translation.
- 8
Probability
Forgetting to reduce the numerator and denominator in 'without replacement' problems.
- 9
Statistics
Plotting cumulative frequency at midpoints instead of upper bounds, and reading histogram heights as frequencies.

How do you get top marks in IGCSE Maths?
Settle your tier early with your teacher: Core and Foundation papers cap the top grade available.
For Cambridge Papers 1 and 2, practise fractions, percentages, standard form and estimation without a calculator every week.
Unless told otherwise, give Cambridge answers to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place for angles in degrees, and round only at the end.
Write the formula and the substitution before the answer; method marks rescue many partly correct responses.
Use the formula list provided, but learn standard results that it does not include, such as circle theorems.
Pace yourself at roughly a mark a minute and flag long problems to return to, rather than stalling on them.

IGCSE Maths FAQs
What is the difference between Core and Extended IGCSE Maths?
Core IGCSE Maths covers a smaller set of content and leads to grades C to G, while Extended covers additional, harder content and allows grades A* to E. Core candidates sit Papers 1 and 3 (1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks each); Extended candidates sit Papers 2 and 4 (2 hours, 100 marks each). Students aiming for a top grade must take Extended.
How many papers are there in IGCSE Maths 0580?
Every Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 candidate sits two papers, each worth 50%. Core candidates take Paper 1 (non-calculator) and Paper 3 (calculator), each 1 hour 30 minutes. Extended candidates take Paper 2 (non-calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator), each 2 hours. This format applies to the syllabus for 2025 to 2027.
Is Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE Maths harder?
Neither Cambridge nor Edexcel IGCSE Maths is officially harder; the content is broadly similar and both are tiered. The main practical difference is that Cambridge 0580 includes a non-calculator paper, while Edexcel 4MA1 allows a calculator in both papers. Your school chooses the board, so preparation should match its specification and past papers.
Can I use a calculator in IGCSE Maths?
It depends on the board. In Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, calculators are not allowed in Papers 1 and 2, but a scientific calculator is required for Papers 3 and 4. In Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1), a calculator may be used in both papers at both tiers.
How can I get an A* or a 9 in IGCSE Maths?
Students who reach an A* or grade 9 in IGCSE Maths sit the Extended or Higher tier, master every topic and practise full past papers under timed conditions. Accuracy habits matter as much as knowledge: clear working, sensible rounding and checking. Our tutors focus on the topics that cost each student marks, but we never guarantee grades.
When are IGCSE Maths exams held?
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is examined in the May/June and October/November series, with an additional March series in India. Cambridge results typically arrive in mid-August and mid-January. Edexcel 4MA1 runs its own series, so check the Pearson timetable for your entry and confirm dates with your school or exam centre.
