Study scores and the ATAR
A VCE study score from 0 to 50 shows how a student performed relative to the whole cohort in that study. The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) uses scaled study scores to calculate the ATAR, a rank up to 99.95.
The ATAR uses a student's best English study plus their best three other scaled scores, with a smaller contribution from up to two further studies.
VCE scaling explained
VTAC scales study scores so that results in different studies can be compared fairly, based on how the students in each study performed across all their subjects. Some studies scale up and others scale down, and the effect changes from year to year.
Students should choose studies they are interested in and can perform well in, rather than relying on scaling alone. VTAC publishes scaling reports each year.
Mathematical Methods, Specialist and General Mathematics
VCE Mathematical Methods is the main calculus-based study and a common prerequisite for science and engineering. Specialist Mathematics is taken alongside Methods and covers more advanced topics. General Mathematics focuses on applied and statistical topics. We help students choose the right combination and build the skills each study design requires.
When are VCE exams and how are they graded?
End-of-year exams
VCE written exams are held from late October to mid-November; results are released in mid-December.
The General Achievement Test (GAT) and some performance or oral exams take place earlier.
School-Assessed Coursework
SACs run through Units 3 and 4 and contribute to each study score.
How VCE is graded
Each VCE study completed at Units 3 and 4 receives a study score from 0 to 50, showing the student's rank relative to everyone taking that study; a score of 30 is roughly the mean. Study scores combine graded assessments, including SACs and exams. VTAC then scales study scores and calculates the ATAR for university entry.

VCE questions parents ask
What is a good ATAR?
A good ATAR is one that meets the entry requirement for the course a student wants, so it depends on their plans. The ATAR is a rank up to 99.95, not a percentage. Universities publish the ATARs needed for each course, and some also use adjustment factors or prerequisites, so checking those pages is the most reliable guide.
What is a VCE study score?
A VCE study score is a number from 0 to 50 showing how a student performed in a study compared with everyone else who took it that year. The mean is about 30. Study scores are based on SACs and exams for Units 3 and 4, and VTAC scales them to calculate the ATAR.
When are VCE exams held?
VCE written exams are held from late October to mid-November each year, with results released in mid-December. The General Achievement Test and some oral or performance exams take place earlier. The VCAA publishes the full exam timetable on its website, so check there for the current year's dates.
Should I take Specialist Maths with Methods?
Specialist Mathematics is worth considering if you are confident in Mathematical Methods and plan to study engineering, physics, mathematics or a related field. It is taken alongside Methods and covers more advanced topics. It is a demanding combination, so look at your Units 1 and 2 results and course prerequisites before deciding.
How does VCE scaling work?
VCE scaling adjusts study scores so that results in different studies can be compared fairly when calculating the ATAR. VTAC looks at how students in each study performed across all their other studies, and some studies scale up while others scale down. The effect varies from year to year and is published by VTAC.
