ATAR and HSC scaling
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a rank showing a student's position relative to their age group, used for university entry. In NSW it is calculated by UAC from scaled marks in the student's best courses, including English.
Scaling adjusts marks between courses based on the strength of the student group taking each one, so raw marks are not directly comparable across subjects. UAC publishes scaling reports each year.
Maths Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2
HSC Mathematics Advanced is the main calculus-based course. Mathematics Extension 1 adds further topics and depth, and Extension 2 is the most demanding, taken in Year 12 by students who also study Extension 1. Many engineering, science and commerce programmes recommend Advanced or Extension courses.
We help students build the foundations in Year 11 and keep pace with extension content in Year 12.
Bands 1 to 6 and what they mean
Each band describes the standard a student has reached against NESA's performance descriptions. Band 6 represents a mark of 90 or above in a 2-unit course, and E4 the top band in extension courses. Band results appear on the HSC record of achievement, while the ATAR is issued separately.
When are HSC exams and how are they graded?
HSC written exams
Held from mid-October to early November in Year 12; results are released in mid-December.
Some courses also have practical, oral or performance exams earlier in Term 3.
School-based assessment
Assessment tasks run through Year 12 and contribute to each course's HSC mark.
How HSC is graded
HSC results are reported as marks and performance bands for each course: Bands 1 to 6 for 2-unit courses, with Band 6 the highest, and E1 to E4 for extension courses. The HSC mark combines moderated school assessment with the exam mark. The ATAR, a rank from 0 to 99.95, is calculated separately by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

HSC questions parents ask
What is the HSC?
The HSC, or Higher School Certificate, is the senior secondary qualification for students in New South Wales, awarded by NESA after Years 11 and 12. Students take a range of courses, including compulsory English, with final exams in late Year 12. Results are reported in bands, and most students also receive an ATAR for university admission.
How is the ATAR calculated in NSW?
In NSW the ATAR is calculated by the Universities Admissions Centre from a student's scaled HSC marks, using their best two units of English plus their best eight units from other courses. Scaling adjusts marks for the relative strength of each course's candidature. The ATAR is a rank, not a mark, and ranges up to 99.95.
When are HSC exams held?
HSC written exams are held from mid-October to early November each year, and results are usually released in mid-December. Some courses have practical, oral or performance components earlier. NESA publishes the full timetable for each year on its website, so students should check the current dates there.
Should I take Maths Extension 1 or Extension 2?
Extension 1 suits students who are confident in Mathematics Advanced and want more depth, and Extension 2 suits students who find Extension 1 manageable and enjoy challenging problem-solving. Extension 2 is taken in Year 12 alongside Extension 1. The right choice depends on the student's current results and future course plans.
What is a Band 6 in the HSC?
A Band 6 is the highest performance band in a 2-unit HSC course, representing a final HSC mark of 90 or above. Extension courses use bands E1 to E4, with E4 the highest. Bands describe the standard reached against NESA's descriptions and appear on the student's HSC record of achievement.
