O Level vs Matric: Which Is Better for Your Child?

By Heights Academic TeamPublished Last updated 8 min read

Key takeaways

Neither Cambridge O Level nor Matric is better for every child. O Level suits students heading for A Levels or study abroad; Matric suits students continuing to FSc in Pakistan. IBCC treats a complete O Level record as equivalent to Matric, and both routes can lead to medicine, engineering and university.

  • Matric is moving to a 10-point scale (A++ to U) with a 40% pass mark; FBISE applies it to Class 9 from 2026 and Class 10 from 2027.
  • IBCC converts O Level grades to marks: A is 85, B 75, C 65, D 55, E 45; only A* is worth more than 90.
  • O Level students who sat exams in Pakistan need eight subjects, including English, Mathematics, Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies, for Matric equivalence.
  • PMDC weights medical merit at 50% MDCAT, 40% HSSC or equivalent and 10% SSC (Matric) or equivalent.
  • June 2026 O Level results were released on 18 August 2026; FBISE's SSC First Annual Examination 2026 began on 31 March.

What is the difference between O Level and Matric?

Cambridge O Level is an international qualification for students aged about 14 to 16, set and marked by Cambridge International Education. Matric, the Secondary School Certificate (SSC), is Pakistan's national Class 9 and 10 qualification, awarded by FBISE or a provincial board. IBCC treats a complete O Level record as equivalent to Matric.

Cambridge International offers more than 40 O Level subjects and assesses each one at the end of the course, through written papers plus oral and practical components in some subjects. Matric is examined in two parts, SSC Part I at the end of Class 9 and SSC Part II at the end of Class 10, in a Science or Humanities group. FBISE's Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024 sets SSC at 1,200 marks.

Verdict: neither is better for every child; it depends on where your child will study next and how they learn.

Is O Level harder than Matric?

No official body ranks Cambridge O Level as harder than Matric, and the two are not marked on a shared difficulty scale. They differ in style. O Level examines each subject once, at the end of the course, with a focus on applying knowledge. Matric splits the syllabus into separate Class 9 and Class 10 board exams.

The O Level structure is what some students find demanding. In O Level Physics (5054), every candidate sits a one-hour multiple-choice paper worth 30%, a 1 hour 45 minute theory paper worth 50% and a practical or alternative-to-practical paper worth 20%, all covering the full syllabus (Cambridge 5054 syllabus, 2026–2028), so revision must cover the whole course at once.

Matric has its own pressures: two rounds of board exams, and papers that are changing. FBISE has announced a new pattern of 50% multiple-choice and 50% descriptive questions in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science, starting at SSC-I level with the Second Annual Examination 2026. The pass mark is rising from 33% to 40%.

In practice, "harder" depends on the child. Students who enjoy applied questions and steady long-term revision often suit O Level; those who prefer a syllabus split into two halves may find Matric easier to manage.

How are O Level and Matric graded?

Cambridge O Level is graded A* to E, with A* the highest grade; work below grade E is reported as ungraded. Matric is moving to a 10-point scale running from A++ (96% to 100%) down to U (below 40%). IBCC introduced the new scale, and Pakistani boards are applying it in phases from the First Annual Examination 2026.

FBISE's grading notification of 7 October 2025 sets out the bands:

Matric gradePercentageDescription
A++96% to 100%Extraordinary
A+91% to 95%Exceptional
A86% to 90%Outstanding
B++81% to 85%Excellent
B+76% to 80%Very Good
B71% to 75%Good
C+61% to 70%Fairly Good
C51% to 60%Above Average
D40% to 50%Emerging
UBelow 40%Ungraded

FBISE applies the scale to SSC-I from the First Annual Examination 2026 and to SSC-II from 2027. According to IBCC's grading FAQs, every board will have adopted it by 2028. IBCC adds that universities may use grades or raw scores in 2026–2027, but raw marks are expected to disappear from mark sheets, tentatively from 2029.

To compare O Level with Matric, IBCC converts each grade into marks out of 100: A is 85, B 75, C 65, D 55 and E 45. An A* is worth more than 90, set per subject for each session. Grades F and G are not accepted (IBCC conversion rules).

When are O Level and Matric exams and results announced?

Cambridge O Level has two exam series each year, June and November. Under Cambridge's international key dates for June 2026, exams ran from 23 April to 9 June and O Level results came out on 18 August 2026. Matric boards hold a First Annual Examination in spring and a Second Annual Examination later in the year.

Cambridge's results page lists 14 January 2027 as the O Level results date for the November 2026 series. Each Cambridge administrative zone has its own timetable, so confirm dates with your school or exam centre.

For Matric, FBISE's SSC Part I and II First Annual Examination 2026 began on 31 March 2026. On the BISE Lahore date sheet, Class 10 papers began on 27 March 2026. Each board publishes its own result dates. Our exam dates hub collects the main deadlines.

How does Matric equivalence work for O Level students?

Matric equivalence is an IBCC certificate that turns O Level grades into Pakistani SSC marks. Students who sat O Levels in Pakistan need eight subjects at grade E or above. Five are compulsory: English, Mathematics, Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies. The other three are electives. Students who sat O Levels abroad need five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

IBCC's British system rules also decide the SSC group. The Science group requires Physics and Chemistry plus one of Biology, Computer Science, IT or ICT. Biology is mandatory for anyone heading towards medicine. IBCC's equivalence FAQs also accept Additional Mathematics in place of Biology or Computer Science.

Switching works in both directions:

  • O Level to FSc or FA: allowed once the student holds an SSC equivalence certificate.
  • Matric to A Level: allowed, because IBCC treats SSC as equivalent to O Level. For later HSSC equivalence, the issuing board must first verify the Matric certificate.

Our IBCC equivalence guide covers documents and fees, and the free, unofficial IBCC equivalence calculator estimates your marks.

Is O Level or Matric better for medical?

Neither O Level nor Matric is automatically better for a medical career; both routes lead to MBBS and BDS admission in Pakistan. PMDC requires an HSSC or equivalent qualification with at least 60% marks, or a higher minimum if PMDC notifies one, plus passes in Biology and Chemistry. O Level students must keep Biology to stay on IBCC's medical route.

PMDC's Admission Regulations 2025 set the merit formula at 50% MDCAT, 40% FSc (Pre-Medical), HSSC or equivalent, and 10% SSC, Matric or equivalent. So the O Level or Matric result counts for a tenth of merit.

The conversion matters here: under IBCC's table, a straight-A O Level record converts to 85 marks per subject, and only A* grades exceed 90. O Level students competing on marks therefore need as many A* grades as possible.

The usual routes into medicine are:

  • O Level route: O Level with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, then either A Level Physics, Chemistry and Biology (for IBCC's Pre-Medical HSSC equivalence) or FSc Pre-Medical after SSC equivalence.
  • Matric route: Matric Science with Biology, then FSc Pre-Medical or A Levels.

On either route, plan MDCAT preparation and check PMDC's current notice for the latest minimum percentage.

Which costs more: O Level or Matric?

O Level usually involves more separate costs than Matric. On top of school fees, families pay Cambridge exam entry fees through the school or exam centre, then an IBCC equivalence fee before joining a Pakistani college. Matric exam fees are set by each board and published in its fee notifications. Fees change every session, so check the official sources.

The main cost drivers are:

  • School fees: these vary most, so compare schools, not just qualifications.
  • Exam fees: Cambridge entry fees for O Level, or board registration and exam fees for Matric. FBISE publishes separate fee notices for candidates in Pakistan and abroad.
  • Equivalence: only O Level students need IBCC equivalence for local admission. Check the current fee on IBCC's website.
  • Tuition: if your child needs support, live online classes cut travel time and match the tutor to your syllabus.

Which should you choose: O Level or Matric?

Choose Cambridge O Level if your child is likely to take A Levels, may study abroad, or does well when each subject is examined at the end of the course. Choose Matric if your child will continue to FSc in Pakistan or you want fewer separate fees. Both routes can lead to medicine, engineering and university.

O Level may suit your child if:

  • A Levels, or study in the UK, the Gulf or elsewhere abroad, are realistic next steps.
  • They like applied, problem-solving questions.
  • Your family may move abroad, where O Level is matched grade for grade with IGCSE.

Matric may suit your child if:

  • FSc at a Pakistani college is the likely next step, with no equivalence needed.
  • They do better with the syllabus examined in two halves.
  • Keeping exam costs simple matters to your family.

Frequently asked questions

Is O Level equivalent to Matric?

Yes, IBCC treats Cambridge O Level as equivalent to Matric (SSC) once its subject requirements are met. Students who sat O Levels in Pakistan need eight subjects, including English, Mathematics, Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies, each at grade E or above. Students who sat abroad need five, including English and Mathematics. IBCC then issues an equivalence certificate showing Pakistani marks and a study group.

Can I do FSc after O Levels?

Yes, an O Level student can join FSc or FA after obtaining an SSC equivalence certificate from IBCC. Apply as soon as results are out, because colleges need equivalence for admission. For FSc Pre-Medical or Pre-Engineering you need IBCC's Science group, which requires O Level Physics and Chemistry plus Biology, Computer Science, IT or ICT, and Biology for medicine.

Can a Matric student do A Levels?

Yes, a student with Matric can move on to A Levels, because IBCC treats SSC as equivalent to O Level. Each school sets its own entry requirements, so check the grades and subjects it expects. When the student later applies for HSSC equivalence based on A Level results, the board that issued the Matric certificate must verify it first.

What is the passing percentage in Matric now?

The Matric pass mark is 40% under IBCC's new grading policy, up from the previous 33%. FBISE applies the new scale to SSC-I (Class 9) from the First Annual Examination 2026 and to SSC-II (Class 10) from 2027, and IBCC expects every board to adopt it by 2028. A student scoring below 40% in a paper is graded U and reappears in that paper.

Do O Level grades count in medical college merit?

Yes, O Level grades count for 10% of medical college merit in Pakistan, through the SSC-equivalent marks on the IBCC certificate. PMDC's Admission Regulations 2025 weight merit at 50% MDCAT, 40% FSc, HSSC or equivalent, and 10% SSC, Matric or equivalent. Because IBCC converts an A to 85 marks, A* grades make a real difference to that component.

Can Pakistani students in the Gulf take Matric?

Yes, FBISE runs SSC exams at some overseas centres; for its First Annual Examination 2026 it issued roll number slips for centres in the UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain. FBISE also publishes separate fee notices for candidates abroad. Families elsewhere should check FBISE's website for current centres, or consider O Level or IGCSE, which IBCC accepts with five subjects when sat abroad.
