Facts last verified:
Pakistan Studies is one of the subjects Pakistani O Level students are normally expected to take, alongside Islamiyat and Urdu, and it gives a structured understanding of how the country came to be and how its land and economy work. It has two halves: history, covering the background to the Pakistan Movement, the emergence of Pakistan from 1906 to 1947 and nationhood from 1947 to 1999, and geography, covering eight environmental topics.
Each paper lasts 1 hour 30 minutes, carries 75 marks and counts for 50%. Paper 1 begins with a compulsory 25-mark question with source-based parts, then students answer two questions from a choice of four, each split into 4, 7 and 14-mark parts. Paper 2 asks students to answer three of five questions, each worth 25 marks and built around maps, graphs, photographs and tables. Cambridge suggests about 30 minutes per question, and all answers are in English.
History answers lose marks when students narrate events instead of explaining causes and judging which factor mattered most, which the 14-mark parts demand. In geography, the weak points are reading resources accurately, using examples specific to Pakistan, and evaluating issues such as water supply, energy choices and industrial growth. The analytical writing practised here supports A Level Sociology, Economics and English General Paper, and the geography content gives useful context for Economics.

How do you get top marks in O Level Pak Studies?
Follow Cambridge's guidance of about 30 minutes per question, then share that time across parts according to their marks.
For 4-mark history parts give precise facts; for 7-mark parts explain two or three developed points; for 14-mark parts explain several factors and reach a supported judgement.
In source questions, refer directly to what the source shows or says, and add your own knowledge only when asked.
In Paper 2, quote figures from graphs and tables with units, and name specific places in Pakistan.
Practise 'do you agree' questions with a clear conclusion; balanced answers with no judgement score lower.
Choose your three Paper 2 questions in the first five minutes by checking every sub-part, not just part (a).

How can I get an A* in O Level Pakistan Studies?

What is the 14-mark question in Pakistan Studies?
The 14-mark question is the final part of each Section B question in Paper 1 of O Level Pakistan Studies, and it tests knowledge, analysis and evaluation. Students are expected to write continuous prose of about two pages, explaining several factors and judging their relative importance. It is where many students gain or lose the most marks.
