How do schools and exams work in the UK?

In England, students take GCSEs at the end of Year 11 (age 16) and usually A Levels at the end of Year 13 (age 18). GCSEs and A Levels are set by awarding bodies regulated by Ofqual, mainly AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR, with WJEC Eduqas also used by some schools. GCSEs are graded 9 to 1, and A Levels A* to E. Some independent schools prefer the IGCSE or offer the IB Diploma instead of A Levels.

Wales and Northern Ireland have their own GCSE and A Level arrangements through WJEC and CCEA, and Scotland has a separate system of National 5 and Higher qualifications. If your child studies outside England, tell us which qualifications they are taking so we can match a tutor who knows them.

Because the same subject can look quite different between boards, for example AQA and Edexcel GCSE Maths papers, we match tutors to your child's board and specification. All lessons are online, so families anywhere in the UK can work with the same subject specialists.

Sitting exams

School students sit GCSEs and A Levels at their own school, which handles entries. Private candidates, such as home-educated students or those resitting after leaving school, must find an exam centre willing to accept them, register and pay the centre's fees, and arrange any coursework or non-exam assessment separately. Each awarding body offers guidance for private candidates, and centres set their own deadlines, so start looking early in the academic year.

School calendar

Schools in England follow three terms (autumn, spring and summer), each split by a half-term break, with the summer holiday from late July to early September. Term dates are set by local councils or academy trusts, so they vary. GCSE and A Level exams run from May to late June; A Level results come out in mid-August, followed a week later by GCSE results. GCSE English and Maths resits are also offered in November.

Questions from families in the UK

How much does an online tutor cost in the UK?

Our online tutoring fees for the UK are listed in GBP on our pricing page. The cost depends on the level, such as GCSE, A Level or IB, whether your child has one-to-one or small-group lessons, and how many sessions a week you book. Online lessons also avoid the travel time and costs of in-person tutoring.

Which exam boards do you cover for GCSE and A Level?

We cover the main GCSE and A Level boards used in England: AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR, plus WJEC Eduqas for some subjects, as well as Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE. Tell us your child's board and specification code, found on their school's website or exercise books, so we can match a tutor who has taught it.

Are online tutors as good as in-person tutors?

Online tutors can be as effective as in-person tutors for GCSE and A Level students, especially in maths and sciences where shared whiteboards make working easy to see. Online lessons also give a wider choice of specialists. Some younger children concentrate better with someone in the room. We teach online only and do not offer home visits.

Can you help with GCSE Maths or English resits?

Yes, we help students preparing for GCSE Maths and English Language resits, including the November series and the following summer. Tutors start by identifying which topics or question types cost the most marks, then build targeted practice. Tell us the board and tier your child will sit so lessons match the paper.

What times are online lessons in UK time?

Online lessons run in UK time, usually from 4pm to 9pm on school days and from morning to late afternoon at weekends. Some families also book extra sessions in half-terms and the Easter holiday before exams. We confirm the exact slot before the first lesson, based on your subject and tutor availability.

Can my child sit GCSEs or A Levels as a private candidate?

Yes, students who are not entered by a school can sit GCSEs and A Levels as private candidates, but they must find an exam centre that accepts them and pay the centre's fees. Subjects with coursework or practical endorsements need extra planning. Start contacting centres early, as many set entry deadlines months before the summer series.
