OSSD requirements

To earn the OSSD, students complete 30 credits, including compulsory credits in English, mathematics, science, Canadian history and geography, the arts, French and other areas, plus optional credits. They also need at least 40 hours of community involvement, at least two online learning credits (unless exempted) and the literacy graduation requirement.

Requirements were updated for students starting Grade 9 in 2024 or later, adding a technological education credit and a financial literacy requirement. Check the Ontario government's current graduation requirements for your cohort.

Ontario course codes explained

Ontario course codes describe the subject, grade and course type. In MHF4U (Advanced Functions), the 4 means Grade 12 and the U means university preparation. Other common Grade 12 U courses include MCV4U (Calculus and Vectors), MDM4U (Data Management), SPH4U (Physics), SCH4U (Chemistry), SBI4U (Biology), ENG4U (English) and ICS4U (Computer Science).

Many science, engineering and business programmes list specific 4U courses as prerequisites.

University applications and OUAC averages

Ontario high-school students apply to Ontario universities through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC). Universities calculate an admission average, usually from the top six Grade 12 U or M courses including prerequisites, and many make conditional offers from Grade 11 and early Grade 12 marks.

Strong marks in MHF4U, MCV4U and the Grade 12 sciences often matter most for competitive programmes. Each university publishes its own requirements.

When are Ontario high school exams and how are they graded?

  1. Semester assessments

Courses run by semester or full year; marks come from ongoing work and final evaluations set by the school.

There is no single provincial exam for Grade 12 course marks.

  2. Provincial assessments

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), usually written in Grade 10, and the Grade 9 EQAO mathematics assessment.

Passing the OSSLT, or an approved alternative, is a graduation requirement.

How Ontario high school is graded

Ontario courses are graded as percentages. Typically, 70% of the final mark comes from work during the course and 30% from a final evaluation, such as an exam or culminating task, set by the school. Universities usually look at a student's best six Grade 12 university-preparation (U) or university/college (M) courses, including any required prerequisites.

How does online Ontario high school tutoring work?

We teach Ontario high-school courses online, following the Ontario curriculum expectations for each course code. Because Ontario marks come from coursework, tests, assignments and final evaluations set by the school, tutors help students keep up week by week rather than only before one big exam. Lessons cover new content, homework support, test preparation and practice on the kinds of problems used in unit tests and final exams.
  1. Diagnostic

A short check of what your child already knows against the syllabus.

  2. Topic teaching

Clear explanations on a shared whiteboard, one topic at a time.

  3. Past-paper practice

  4. Feedback

What went well, what to fix and what to practise before next class.

Ontario tutoring suits Grade 11 and Grade 12 students working towards university-preparation course averages, students new to Canada adjusting to a different system, and students taking OSSD courses at Ontario-inspected schools abroad. Lessons are scheduled in Eastern time or your local time, one-to-one or in small groups, with regular progress updates for parents. A free trial class lets students meet a tutor before committing.

Ontario high school questions parents ask

Can you tutor Ontario math courses online from anywhere in Canada?

Yes. We tutor Ontario secondary math courses online, including the Grade 12 courses MHF4U, MCV4U and MDM4U, for students anywhere in Canada or abroad who follow the Ontario curriculum. Lessons are live and scheduled in your own timezone, and the tutor works from the Ontario curriculum expectations and your course outline.

What does MHF4U mean?

MHF4U is the Ontario course code for Grade 12 Advanced Functions, a university-preparation mathematics course. In Ontario codes, the first letters identify the subject and course, the number 4 means Grade 12, and the U means university preparation. MHF4U is a common prerequisite for science, engineering, business and mathematics programmes.

Should I take MHF4U and MCV4U at the same time?

Many students take MHF4U before or alongside MCV4U, and some schools require Advanced Functions first or at the same time. Taking them together is manageable for students with solid Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U), but it is a heavy workload. Check your school's prerequisite rules, and consider tutoring support if you combine them.

How do Ontario universities calculate admission averages?

Ontario universities usually calculate an admission average from a student's top six Grade 12 U or M courses, including the prerequisites for the programme. Some programmes add supplementary applications or weight particular courses. Each university publishes its own rules, so check the specific programme's admission page.

Is there a provincial exam for Grade 12 in Ontario?

No, Ontario has no single provincial exam for Grade 12 course marks. Final marks are set by the school, typically 70% from term work and 30% from a final evaluation such as an exam or culminating task. The main provincial assessments are the Grade 9 EQAO mathematics assessment and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test.

Do you tutor Ontario students in Toronto and Mississauga?

Yes, we tutor Ontario students in Toronto, Mississauga, the wider GTA and across the province through live online lessons in Eastern time. Tutors follow the Ontario course code and expectations for each course. Fees can be shown in Canadian dollars on our pricing page, and you can book a free trial class first.

Can students outside Canada take Ontario courses?

Yes, some schools outside Canada are inspected by the Ontario Ministry of Education and offer OSSD credits, including schools in the Gulf. Their students follow the same course codes and expectations. We can tutor these students online in their local time zone, following the same Ontario curriculum as schools in Canada.
