How do schools and exams work in the USA?

In the United States, high school graduation requirements are set by each state and school district, so course names and credit rules vary. Students build a grade point average (GPA) across Grades 9 to 12, and many take Advanced Placement (AP) courses, the IB Diploma Programme or dual-enrolment college classes to show they can handle university-level work.

College admissions usually look at GPA, course rigour, AP or IB results and, at many colleges, SAT or ACT scores, alongside essays and activities. Testing policies differ between colleges, so it is worth checking each one on your list.

Many states also require end-of-course or Regents-style exams in core subjects. We tutor online only, covering high school maths and sciences, AP courses and SAT preparation, with lessons scheduled in your local time zone.

Sitting exams

AP exams are held in May, normally at the student's own school; homeschooled students or those at schools without AP can arrange to test at another school through its AP coordinator. The SAT is offered on several weekend dates a year at test centres, and many schools also run it on a school day. State exams, such as New York's Regents or Texas's STAAR end-of-course tests, are taken at school.

School calendar

The school year usually runs from mid-August or early September to late May or June, depending on the state and district. AP exams take place over the first two weeks of May. Winter break falls around the holidays in late December, and spring break is usually in March or April.

Questions from families in the USA

Do you offer online tutoring for high school students in the USA?

Yes, we offer live online tutoring for US high school students in maths, physics, chemistry and biology, as well as AP courses and SAT prep. Lessons are scheduled in your local time zone, from Eastern to Pacific. Tell us your child's grade, courses and goals, and we will match a tutor who knows that material.

How much does an online tutor cost in the USA?

Our online tutoring fees for the USA are listed in USD on our pricing page. The cost depends on the level, such as standard high school courses, AP or IB, whether lessons are one-to-one or in a small group, and how many sessions a week you book. There are no travel costs.

Do you offer AP tutoring?

Yes, we offer AP tutoring in subjects including Calculus AB and BC, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Statistics. Tutors follow the College Board course and exam description and practise free-response questions using official scoring guidelines. Starting in the autumn gives time to cover the full course before the May exam.

Can you help my child prepare for the SAT?

Yes, we help students prepare for the digital SAT, covering both Reading and Writing and Math. Tutors begin with a diagnostic using official College Board practice, then focus on the question types that cost the most points. Tell us your test date and target score, and we will plan backwards from it.

Is online tutoring as effective as in-person tutoring in the USA?

Online tutoring can be as effective as in-person tutoring for high school students, especially in maths and science, where a shared whiteboard makes each step visible. Online lessons also widen the choice of specialists. Some younger students do better with someone in the room. We teach online only and do not offer home visits.
