Facts last verified:

Additional Mathematics is an optional O Level taken alongside Mathematics 4024 by students who enjoy algebra and want a head start on A Level. It is popular with students heading for pre-engineering, physics, computer science or economics, because it introduces differentiation, integration, logarithms and radians well before A Level does. It is a separate qualification with its own grade, so it adds an O Level to a student's record rather than replacing core Maths.

The exam has two papers of equal weight. Paper 1 is non-calculator and Paper 2 requires a scientific calculator; each lasts 2 hours and carries 80 marks. With fewer marks per hour than core Maths, questions are longer and more demanding, and one algebra slip early in a part can affect everything after it. The 14 topics are not set in teaching order, so a single question may join coordinate geometry with calculus, or trigonometry with radians.

Students usually find calculus applications, trigonometric identities and equations, logarithmic manipulation and the coordinate geometry of the circle the toughest areas. Working without a calculator on Paper 1 also exposes shaky surd and fraction skills. The pay-off comes later: A Level Pure Mathematics revisits most 4037 topics in more depth, so students who finish Additional Maths with secure algebra tend to find the first year of A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics far more manageable.

What topics are in O Level Add Maths?

The full syllabus, with the spots where students most often lose marks.
  1. 1

    Functions

Confusing an inverse function with a reciprocal, and not stating the domain or range when asked.

  2. 2

    Quadratic functions

Completing the square with the wrong sign and reversing inequality directions in discriminant questions.

  3. 3

    Factors of polynomials

Arithmetic slips with the factor and remainder theorems, and stopping before the cubic is fully factorised.

  4. 4

    Equations, inequalities and graphs

Sketching modulus graphs without reflecting the negative section, and missing solutions of modulus equations.

  5. 5

    Simultaneous equations

Substituting a linear equation into a quadratic correctly but then pairing the x and y values wrongly.

  6. 6

    Logarithmic and exponential functions

Inventing log laws, such as treating log(a + b) as log a + log b.

  7. 7

    Straight-line graphs

Not converting a relationship into straight-line form before reading the gradient and intercept.

  8. 8

    Coordinate geometry of the circle

Errors finding the centre and radius, and skipping the perpendicular-radius reasoning for tangents.

  9. 9

    Circular measure

Using degrees in arc-length and sector-area formulas that need radians.

  10. 10

    Trigonometry

Finding only one solution in the given interval, and proving identities by working on both sides at once.

  11. 11

    Permutations and combinations

Misjudging whether order matters, and mishandling restrictions such as items that must stay together.

  12. 12

    Series

Mixing up arithmetic and geometric progression formulas, and sign errors in binomial expansion terms.

  13. 13

    Vectors in two dimensions

Writing a route in the wrong direction (AB instead of BA) and not forming a unit vector before scaling.

  14. 14

    Calculus

Dropping the constant of integration, misusing the chain, product or quotient rule, and not justifying the nature of a stationary point.

How do you get top marks in O Level Add Maths?

  • Practise surds, exact trigonometric values and fraction arithmetic until they are fluent, because Paper 1 answers must all be found by hand.

  • Give exact answers (surds, multiples of π, logarithmic forms) when asked; a rounded decimal can cost the accuracy mark.

  • In 'show that' questions the answer is printed, so every mark is for the working: set out each step explicitly.

  • Check whether an angle question uses degrees or radians and set your calculator to match before starting Paper 2.

  • For trigonometric equations, sketch the graph over the stated interval to make sure you find every solution.

  • With 80 marks in 2 hours, allow about one and a half minutes per mark and keep ten minutes to revisit skipped parts.

O Level Add Maths FAQs

Is O Level Additional Maths hard?

O Level Additional Maths is noticeably harder than core O Level Maths, because it moves into abstract algebra, logarithms, trigonometric identities and calculus. Students who are already confident with 4024 algebra usually cope well with steady practice. The jump is mainly in the length and reasoning of each question, so regular timed practice matters more than memorising formulas.

Is Additional Maths compulsory for A Level Maths?

No, Additional Mathematics is not compulsory for A Level Mathematics, but it is very helpful. Many A Level topics, including logarithms, radians, the factor theorem and differentiation, are introduced in 4037, so students who have taken it start A Level with less new material. Students who skip it can still do well if they strengthen their algebra before A Level begins.

How many papers are in O Level Additional Maths 4037?

There are two papers in O Level Additional Mathematics 4037, each 2 hours long and worth 80 marks, and each counts for 50% of the grade. Paper 1 is non-calculator and Paper 2 requires a scientific calculator. Both papers can examine any of the 14 syllabus topics, so no area can safely be left out of revision.

What topics are in O Level Additional Maths?

O Level Additional Maths 4037 has 14 topics: functions, quadratic functions, factors of polynomials, equations and inequalities with graphs, simultaneous equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, straight-line graphs, the circle, circular measure, trigonometry, permutations and combinations, series, vectors and calculus. Calculus links to several other topics, so it rewards early and regular study.

Can I take Additional Maths and Maths in the same exam series?

Yes, students can take O Level Additional Mathematics 4037 and Mathematics 4024 in the same exam series, and many schools enter students for both together. Studying them side by side means algebra practice serves both subjects, though students should leave extra revision time for the longer, multi-step Additional Maths questions.

Should I take Additional Maths if I want to study medicine?

Additional Maths is not required for medicine, which mainly depends on Biology and Chemistry at A Level or FSc, but it can still help if you plan to take A Level Mathematics or Physics. Students focused on medicine should weigh it against the time it takes from their science subjects and discuss the choice with their school.
