Compulsory O Level subjects for Pakistani students
Most Pakistani schools ask students to take English Language, Urdu, Islamiyat, Pakistan Studies and Mathematics alongside three or more elective subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Economics or Accounting. These subjects are commonly required for IBCC equivalence with Matric, which students need for admission to many colleges and universities in Pakistan.
Requirements can change, and different rules may apply to overseas or non-Muslim students. Check current IBCC rules before choosing subjects, and ask us if you would like help planning a combination that keeps future A Level options open.
Taking O Level as a private candidate
In Pakistan, students who are not entered through a school can usually sit Cambridge O Level as private candidates through the British Council, which runs registration and exam centres in major cities. Registration windows close several months before each series, so private candidates should check the British Council's deadlines early.
In the Gulf, private entries are handled by approved exam centres and some British Council offices. We can tutor private candidates through the whole syllabus, including past-paper practice, but registration itself is done by the family with the centre.
1:1 vs group O Level classes
One-to-one classes suit students who need a tailored pace, have gaps in earlier topics or are preparing for a resit. Small-group classes suit students who are broadly on track and benefit from working through past papers with peers at a similar level.
Both formats use the same syllabus-based plan, and students can move between them if their needs change. Fees for each format, shown in your currency, are on our pricing page.
When are O Level exams and how are they graded?
May/June
Exams run from late April to June; results are released in mid-August.
The main series for most schools and private candidates in Pakistan and the Gulf.
October/November
Exams run in October and November; results are released in mid-January.
Often used for resits or for students who want to spread subjects over two series.
How O Level is graded
Cambridge O Level is graded A*, A, B, C, D and E, with A* the highest; work below grade E is reported as ungraded (U). Grade thresholds, the raw marks needed for each grade, are set separately for every subject in every series and published by Cambridge after results, so the marks needed for an A* can change from one year to the next.
How does online O Level tutoring work?
Diagnostic
A short check of what your child already knows against the syllabus.
Topic teaching
Clear explanations on a shared whiteboard, one topic at a time.
Past-paper practice
Exam questions from your board, timed and marked to the mark scheme.
Feedback
What went well, what to fix and what to practise before next class.
O Level tuition suits students in Classes 8 to 11 (or Years 9 to 11) who want steady support through the syllabus, students who have fallen behind in one or two subjects, and private candidates preparing outside a school. Families in the Gulf often choose online classes because timings can be set around Gulf school hours and the weekend. Parents receive regular updates on progress, topics covered and what comes next.

O Level questions parents ask
How many subjects are in O Level?
Most O Level students take eight or nine subjects, although Cambridge does not set a fixed number. In Pakistan, schools usually combine English, Urdu, Islamiyat, Pakistan Studies and Mathematics with three or more electives such as the sciences, Computer Science or Economics, because eight subjects are commonly needed for IBCC equivalence. Check current IBCC rules for your situation.
What are the compulsory O Level subjects in Pakistan?
English Language, Urdu, Islamiyat, Pakistan Studies and Mathematics are the subjects commonly required for Pakistani students taking O Level. They matter mainly for IBCC equivalence with Matric, which colleges and universities in Pakistan ask for. Exemptions and alternatives can apply, for example for overseas or non-Muslim students, so check current IBCC rules before finalising subject choices.
Is O Level harder than Matric?
O Level is generally seen as more demanding in its style of assessment than Matric, because questions test understanding and application rather than recall of textbook answers. Neither route is simply easier; the right choice depends on the student, their school and their plans after Class 10. We teach both, and can help families compare the two.
Can I take O Level as a private candidate?
Yes, students can sit Cambridge O Level as private candidates. In Pakistan this is usually arranged through the British Council, and in the Gulf through approved exam centres. The family registers directly with the centre before its deadline. We can then tutor the student through the syllabus and past papers online, on a timetable that fits around their week.
When are O Level results announced?
Cambridge O Level results for the May/June series are released in mid-August, and results for the October/November series are released in mid-January. Schools and the British Council share results with candidates on the release day. Cambridge publishes the exact date for each series on its website, so check there for the current year.
Can I study O Level online from Saudi Arabia or the UAE?
Yes, students in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the rest of the Gulf can take live O Level classes with us online. Timings are arranged in your local time, usually after school or at the weekend, and fees can be shown in your currency on our pricing page. The exams themselves are sat in person at a school or approved centre.
How much does O Level tuition cost?
O Level tuition fees depend on whether you choose one-to-one or small-group classes and how many sessions you need each week. Our pricing page shows current fees in your currency, including Pakistani rupees, dirhams and riyals. You can also book a free trial class first so your child can meet a tutor before you decide.
