What is the Medical and Dental College Admission Test format?

Key facts from Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. Always confirm dates on the official site before you book.
BiologyThe largest section by number of questions, based on the PMDC MDCAT syllabus, which closely follows FSc Pre-Medical Biology.
ChemistryPhysical, inorganic and organic chemistry topics from the PMDC MDCAT syllabus.
PhysicsMechanics, electricity, waves and modern physics topics from the PMDC MDCAT syllabus.
EnglishGrammar, vocabulary and comprehension questions.
Logical ReasoningQuestions on reasoning, patterns and problem-solving that do not depend on subject knowledge.
FormatAll questions are multiple choice. PMDC publishes the syllabus, the number of questions per subject, the test format and the marking rules for each year's test.
ScoringThe MDCAT is marked out of the total number of MCQs, and PMDC sets a minimum passing percentage, which has differed for medical and dental admission. For admission, universities and admitting authorities combine the MDCAT score with FSc (or equivalent) marks, and sometimes Matric marks, using an aggregate formula they publish each year.
Test datesThe MDCAT is usually held once a year, typically in late summer or autumn, though the date has varied between years and provinces. PMDC announces the date, registration window and syllabus each year, so check the PMDC website for the current notice.

How do we prepare students for the MDCAT?

  1. Diagnostic test

A timed MCQ test across all five subjects shows the student's starting level and which syllabus areas need the most work.

  2. Target and timetable

We agree a target score with the student and plan the weeks before the test around the PMDC syllabus and their board exam schedule.

  3. Weekly subject modules

Lessons work through the syllabus subject by subject, with Biology given the most time, and short MCQ sets after each topic.

  4. Timed mock tests

Full-length mocks under timed conditions build speed, accuracy and stamina for the real test.

  5. Review and revision

The tutor reviews each mock with the student, focuses revision on recurring errors and keeps the plan up to date if PMDC changes the syllabus.

MDCAT questions students ask

What subjects are in the MDCAT?

The MDCAT covers Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English and Logical Reasoning, all in multiple-choice format. Biology carries the most questions. PMDC publishes the detailed syllabus and the number of questions per subject each year, and these can change, so always check the current PMDC syllabus before planning preparation.

When is the MDCAT held?

The MDCAT is usually held once a year, typically in late summer or autumn, but the exact date changes from year to year. PMDC announces the test date, registration window and syllabus in an official notice. Check the PMDC website regularly during the year you plan to apply.

Can A Level students take the MDCAT?

Yes, A Level students can take the MDCAT, but they need IBCC equivalence of their O Level and A Level results to Matric and FSc Pre-Medical. This usually requires A Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A Level students should apply for equivalence early, and may need to focus on syllabus areas taught differently from FSc.

How is the MDCAT aggregate calculated?

The MDCAT aggregate combines your MDCAT score with your FSc or equivalent marks, and sometimes your Matric marks, using weightings set by the admitting university or authority. The formula has changed over the years and can differ by province or institution, so check the current admission policy published for the year you apply.

How long should I prepare for the MDCAT?

Many students prepare for the MDCAT over three to six months, often starting seriously after FSc Part II exams. Students who kept up well with FSc Biology, Chemistry and Physics may need less time. Starting with a diagnostic test gives a clearer picture of how much preparation you need.

Can I prepare for the MDCAT online from the Gulf?

Yes, Pakistani students in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and across the Gulf can prepare for the MDCAT with live online lessons in their local time. The test itself is taken in person at a centre designated by PMDC, so check the official notice for centre locations. Fees can be shown in your currency on our pricing page.
