By Heights Academic TeamPublished Last updated 8 min read
Key takeaways
To register as an O Level or A Level private candidate in Pakistan, create a registration on the British Council's School Registration System, choose your subjects and option codes, and pay before the deadline. A parent registers students under 18. The British Council enters you with Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel or OxfordAQA and runs the exam venues.
- Cambridge exams run in May/June and October/November; the October/November 2026 normal deadline was 6 August 2026.
- A deadline means registered and paid; late entries and changes cost an extra fee.
- Cambridge private candidates cannot take syllabuses that require coursework.
- O Level sciences use an Alternative to Practical paper; A Level private candidates sit the lab practical at the venue.
- Results arrive online about six weeks after the exams; IBCC equivalence works the same as for school candidates.

What is a private candidate for O Level and A Level?
A private candidate is a student who sits Cambridge O Level, IGCSE or AS & A Level exams without being entered by a registered school. In Pakistan, private candidates register directly with the British Council, which enters them with the awarding body, runs the exam venues and passes on results and certificates.
Cambridge International says private candidates must find an approved exam provider that accepts private candidates, pay that provider, and collect results and certificates through it. In Pakistan that provider is the British Council, which also enters private candidates for Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA. The papers and grades are identical to a school candidate's.

Who can register as a private candidate in Pakistan?
Any student can register as a private candidate in Pakistan through the British Council, and neither the British Council nor the awarding bodies set an age limit. Students under 18 must be registered by a parent or guardian. Common reasons include home-schooling, studying at an academy that is not a Cambridge centre, and retaking subjects.
According to the British Council FAQs for private candidates, you can even sit more than one board in the same series, such as Cambridge A Level Physics alongside Pearson International A Level Physics. Typical private candidates include:
- Home-schooled students taking a full set of O Levels.
- Students at academies that cannot enter candidates themselves.
- School leavers retaking a subject, often in the October/November series.
- School students whose school does not offer a subject. They can take that subject privately, but each centre issues a separate certificate that cannot be merged.
You cannot take the same subject at your school and at the British Council in the same series.
How do you register as an O Level or A Level private candidate?
Private candidates in Pakistan register online through the British Council's School Registration System (SRS), choose their subjects, and pay before the published deadline. The British Council treats a registration as complete only once the fee is paid and the paperwork has arrived. You never apply to Cambridge directly.
- Check the series and deadlines on the British Council's private candidate registration page, and plan around our exam dates hub.
- Confirm syllabus and option codes. Each subject has a four-digit code (for example 5054 for O Level Physics) and an option code that sets which papers you sit. Make sure your option is open to private candidates.
- Register on the School Registration System and select Pakistan. A parent or guardian completes it for under-18s. Enter the CNIC or B-Form number exactly.
- Pay the fees by card, ATM or IBFT into the virtual account you are assigned, or by bank deposit at a designated Standard Chartered branch. Card payments attract advance tax (1% for filers, 3% for non-filers), which is not refunded.
- Send your payment pink slip and registration summary so they reach the British Council office before the deadline. The British Council accepts no liability for items lost in transit.
- Request access arrangements at least six weeks before your exam if you have special educational needs, a disability or a temporary injury.
- Check your Statement of Entry carefully. Your name prints on the certificate as entered, and certificates cannot be changed.
What documents do private candidates need?
Private candidates in Pakistan need a valid original identity document at registration and on exam day. Pakistani nationals use a NADRA CNIC, or a B-Form or SMART card if under 18; non-Pakistani nationals use a passport. On exam day you also need a printed Statement of Entry, or you risk being refused entry.
Cambridge now requires your CNIC or B-Form number as part of every entry, and the British Council advises bringing the same ID you registered with. Keep ready:
- Your CNIC, B-Form, SMART card or passport.
- The bank's pink payment slip and your SRS registration summary.
- Previous centre and candidate numbers if you are retaking or carrying forward marks.
- A medical certificate if you need access arrangements.
When do registrations open and close for private candidates?
British Council registration for each Cambridge series closes months before the exams start. For the October/November 2026 series, the normal deadline was 6 August 2026 and the late and retake deadline was 3 September 2026. Entries after that are still possible but cost extra and need British Council approval.
When we checked on 1 October 2026, the British Council's registration page showed these deadlines:
| Board and series | Normal deadline | Late deadline(s) |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge, October/November 2026 | Thursday 6 August 2026 | Thursday 3 September 2026 (late stage and retakes) |
| Pearson Edexcel International A Level, January 2027 | 9 October 2026 | 6 November 2026; 20 December 2026 |
| Pearson Edexcel GCSE/International GCSE, October/November 2026 | Monday 7 September 2026 | Friday 2 October 2026 |
Deadlines for Cambridge May/June 2027 were not yet published there. Plan to register two to three months before your exams, and always check the official page rather than last year's dates. Three rules catch people out:
- A deadline means registered and paid. Late payments are charged the late fee.
- Adding subjects or changing option codes after the deadline also incurs a late fee.
- Withdrawals before the deadline are refunded minus PKR 1,500 per subject; late-stage penalty fees are not refunded.
Can private candidates take practicals and coursework?
Cambridge private candidates cannot take syllabuses that require coursework, because no centre supervises and authenticates the work. Science is still open: O Level sciences in Pakistan test practical skills through a written Alternative to Practical paper, while AS & A Level private candidates sit the laboratory practical at the British Council venue.
Cambridge states that private candidates cannot enter for syllabuses that include coursework. The British Council's November 2026 guide to making entries for Pakistan (administrative zone 4) marks each option. In that guide:
- O Level Physics (5054), Chemistry (5070) and Biology (5090) have one option, made up of multiple choice, theory and Alternative to Practical papers, and it is open to private candidates.
- AS & A Level Physics (9702), Chemistry (9701) and Biology (9700), including the Advanced Practical Skills papers, are open to private candidates, so book some hands-on lab practice before the exam.
- O Level Art & Design (6090) and AS & A Level Global Perspectives & Research (9239) have no option open to private candidates, and coursework options in subjects such as A Level Design & Technology are closed too.
- O Level English Language (1123), Mathematics D (4024), Islamiyat (2058), Pakistan Studies (2059) and Second Language Urdu (3248) are all open to private candidates.
Availability can change between series, so check the SRS subject list before you plan.
Where do private candidates sit their exams?
Private candidates sit their exams at venues arranged by the British Council in Pakistan, not at their own school. The exact venue and timing of each paper are in the Venue Letter, which the British Council issues with the Statement of Entry two to three weeks before the series begins. Read both documents carefully.
The British Council's exam day guidance asks you to arrive 60 minutes early with original ID, a printed Statement of Entry, stationery in a clear bag and an approved calculator. Phones are not allowed in the exam room. If two papers clash, you sit them back to back with a 10-minute supervised break.
When do private candidates get results and certificates?
Private candidates in Pakistan typically get results online about six weeks after their exams, according to the British Council. Cambridge releases June series results in August and November series results in January. For November 2026, AS & A Level results come out on 7 January 2027, and O Level and IGCSE results on 14 January 2027.
Those dates come from Cambridge's results release page. The British Council gives you login details for Cambridge's online results service or Pearson's ResultsPlus Direct. The British Council results page says certificates usually follow within two to three weeks and are sent to your home address in Pakistan. Each board issues only one original certificate. If a grade disappoints you, you can request a result enquiry (six to eight weeks) or resit next series, and the higher grade counts.
Do private candidates need IBCC equivalence?
Yes. Private candidates who want to continue into FSc, A Level colleges or Pakistani universities need IBCC equivalence, exactly like school candidates. The Inter Boards Coordination Commission converts O Level results into a Matric (SSC) equivalent and A Level results into an Intermediate (HSSC) equivalent, whichever centre entered you.
For students who sat exams from Pakistan, IBCC's rules for British qualifications require eight O Level subjects, including English, Mathematics, Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies, at grade E or above. Private candidates choose their own subjects, so build all five into the plan. Our guide to IBCC equivalence for O and A Level and free, unofficial IBCC equivalence calculator explain the conversion.

Frequently asked questions
Can I give O Level exams privately in Pakistan?
Yes, you can sit Cambridge O Level exams privately in Pakistan by registering with the British Council as a private candidate. You register online through its School Registration System, pay the per-subject fees and sit the exams at a British Council venue. You do not need to be enrolled in a school, and there is no age limit, but a parent or guardian must register students under 18.
How much is the British Council fee for O Level private candidates?
The British Council does not publish one fixed O Level fee on its website; each awarding body charges a fee per subject, and the current amounts appear inside the School Registration System when you register. Late entries cost extra. If you withdraw before the deadline, the British Council deducts an administration fee of PKR 1,500 per subject, and card payments also attract a bank advance tax of 1% or 3%.
Can I register for O Level after the deadline?
Yes, you can usually register after the published deadline, but the entry incurs a late fee and needs British Council approval. A deadline counts only if you have both registered and paid, so a registration paid after the date is treated as late. Changing subjects or option codes after the deadline also attracts a late fee, so finalise your entry early.
Can a private candidate do the A Level physics practical?
Yes, private candidates in Pakistan can sit the Cambridge AS Level Advanced Practical Skills papers for Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The British Council's November 2026 entry guide lists these options as available to private candidates. You do the practical at the exam venue, so you need real laboratory practice beforehand, not just past-paper reading. O Level sciences use a written Alternative to Practical paper instead.
Is there an age limit for private candidates?
No, there is no age limit for O Level or A Level private candidates. The British Council and the awarding bodies do not impose age restrictions, so both younger students and adults can register. The only age rule is administrative: a parent or guardian must complete the registration for anyone under 18, and under-18 Pakistani nationals use a B-Form or SMART card rather than a CNIC.
Are private candidate results treated the same as school results?
Yes, private candidates sit the same papers, are marked to the same standard and receive certificates from the same awarding body as school candidates. IBCC applies the same equivalence rules to both. Universities set their own entry requirements, so always check each course's subject and grade requirements, but the qualification itself is the same whichever centre entered you.
How do I check my O Level result as a private candidate?
Private candidates check Cambridge O Level results online through Cambridge's results service, using login details supplied by the British Council. Results are typically available about six weeks after the exams; for the November 2026 series, O Level results are released on 14 January 2027. The final certificate follows, usually within two to three weeks, and is sent to your home address in Pakistan.
