AS vs A2: how the A Level is structured

Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel International A Levels are usually split into AS (the first year) and A2 (the second year). Students can take AS papers at the end of the first year and carry the result forward, or take all papers together at the end. Pearson's international A Levels are modular, so individual units can be resat.

UK A Levels from AQA, OCR and Pearson Edexcel are linear: all exams for the full A Level are sat at the end of the two-year course, and a separate AS is a standalone qualification that does not count towards the A Level.

Subject combinations for medicine and engineering

Students aiming for medicine usually take Biology and Chemistry, often with Physics or Mathematics as the third subject. In Pakistan, students who want to apply through MDCAT need IBCC equivalence, which commonly requires Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Engineering applicants usually take Mathematics and Physics, with Further Mathematics or Chemistry as useful additions.

Entry requirements vary by university and country, so check each course's published requirements before choosing subjects. We can talk through options with you, but the final choice should follow official admissions guidance.

A Levels and UCAS applications

For UK universities, students apply through UCAS, usually in the autumn of their final year. Universities make offers based on predicted grades from the school, so performance in Year 12 or AS work matters. Some courses, including medicine and dentistry, also require an admissions test such as the UCAT.

Our tutors can help students build the subject knowledge behind their predicted grades and prepare for the final exams that confirm their offers.

Cambridge, Edexcel or UK board: which do we teach?

We teach all three. Many students in Pakistan and the Gulf follow Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel International A Levels, while students in the UK usually follow AQA, OCR or Pearson Edexcel. Content overlaps a great deal, but the papers, question styles and mark schemes differ, so we match each student with a tutor who knows their specification.

When are A Level exams and how are they graded?

  1. Cambridge May/June

Exams run from late April to June; results are released in mid-August.

  2. Cambridge October/November

Exams run in October and November; results are released in mid-January.

  3. Pearson Edexcel International A Level

Exams are offered in January, May/June and October/November series.

Not every unit is available in every series; check Pearson's timetable for your subjects.

  4. UK A Levels (AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel)

Exams run in May and June; results are released in mid-August.

How A Level is graded

Full A Levels are graded A*, A, B, C, D and E, with A* the highest; AS Levels are graded a to e, with no a*. For Cambridge International and many UK subjects, AS can be taken as a standalone qualification or as the first half of the full A Level. Grade thresholds are set for each paper in each series and published by the boards after results.

How does online A Level tutoring work?

We teach A Level online for Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel International and the UK boards, matching each lesson to the student's exact specification. A Level content moves quickly and builds on itself, so tutors begin with a diagnostic, map the remaining syllabus against the student's exam dates and then work through topics with regular past-paper questions. Students learn to read mark schemes and to structure longer answers, which is where many marks are won or lost.
  1. Diagnostic

A short check of what your child already knows against the syllabus.

  2. Topic teaching

Clear explanations on a shared whiteboard, one topic at a time.

  3. Past-paper practice

Exam questions from your board, timed and marked to the mark scheme.

  4. Feedback

What went well, what to fix and what to practise before next class.

A Level classes suit students in AS or A2 who want to secure a target grade for university offers, those combining school with medical or engineering entry tests, and students resitting a paper. We work with families in Pakistan, the Gulf and the UK, scheduling lessons around school timetables and time zones. Parents receive regular progress notes so they can see how preparation is going.

How much does A Level tuition cost?

Group classes are billed monthly; one-to-one classes per class or in monthly packs.

A Level questions parents ask

How many subjects should I take at A Level?

Most students take three A Level subjects, and some take four, often including Further Mathematics. Three subjects are enough for the large majority of university courses in the UK, Pakistan and elsewhere. Taking a fourth can make sense for strong students in related subjects, but it adds a significant workload, so it should be discussed with the school first.

What A Level subjects do I need for medicine?

Most medical schools expect A Level Chemistry and Biology, and many students add Physics or Mathematics as a third subject. In Pakistan, students applying to medical colleges through MDCAT usually need Biology, Chemistry and Physics for IBCC equivalence with FSc Pre-Medical. Requirements differ by university, so always check the current entry criteria for each course.

What is the difference between AS and A Level?

AS Level covers roughly the first half of an A Level and is usually studied in the first year, while the full A Level adds the A2 content in the second year. For Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel International, AS can count towards the full A Level. For UK A Levels, the AS is a separate qualification.

Do you teach both Cambridge and Edexcel A Levels?

Yes, we teach Cambridge International AS & A Level, Pearson Edexcel International A Level and UK A Levels from AQA, OCR and Pearson Edexcel. Each student is matched with a tutor who knows their exact specification and paper structure, because question styles and mark schemes differ between boards even when the topics overlap.

When are A Level results released?

Cambridge International and UK A Level results for the summer series are released in mid-August, and Cambridge results for the October/November series come out in mid-January. Pearson Edexcel International A Level results follow each of its January, summer and autumn series. Each board publishes exact results dates on its website.

Can I resit an A Level exam?

Yes, A Level papers can be resat in a later series, although the rules depend on the board. Pearson Edexcel International A Levels are modular, so individual units can be retaken. Cambridge papers can be retaken in the October/November or May/June series. UK linear A Levels usually mean resitting all papers the following summer.

Are online A Level classes available in UK and Gulf time zones?

Yes, we schedule live A Level classes in your local time, whether you are in the UK, the Gulf or Pakistan. Most sessions run after school or at weekends. Fees are shown in your currency on our pricing page, and you can book a free trial class to check the timing and tutor fit first.
