Business Studies appeals to students who want a practical subject linked to the real world, whether they plan to study commerce, management, economics or law, or to join a family business. It explains how businesses are set up, organised, financed and marketed, and how outside forces affect them. From June 2027 Cambridge has renamed the subject Business and changed its code from 7115 to 7081, keeping the same six content sections with some refreshed subtopics.

Both the outgoing and the new syllabus use two papers of 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, each worth 50%. Paper 1 contains four compulsory questions mixing short answers with structured data response. Paper 2 is built around a case study supplied as an insert, with four compulsory questions that require students to apply ideas to that business and make justified recommendations. Calculations such as break-even and cash flow may appear on either paper.

The biggest difference between a middle and a top grade is application. Students often know definitions but write generic answers that could apply to any firm, or recommend options without weighing them up. Finance questions, especially cash-flow forecasts, break-even and interpreting statements, also cost marks. The subject leads directly to A Level Business and supports A Level Economics and Accounting, where evaluation and data interpretation are developed further.

How do you get top marks in O Level Business?

  • Use the business name, products and figures from the case study in every answer beyond simple definitions.

  • For 'justify' or 'recommend' questions, compare at least two options and end with a clear decision and reason.

  • Show all workings in calculations and state units such as currency or percentages.

  • Match depth to marks: a 2-mark 'identify' needs no explanation, while a longer 'justify' needs a supported argument.

  • Read the whole case-study insert before starting Paper 2 and annotate useful data for each question.

  • Learn the formulas listed in the syllabus, such as break-even and margin of safety, until you can apply them quickly.
