How do schools and exams work in Australia?

Each Australian state awards its own senior secondary certificate at the end of Year 12: the Higher School Certificate (HSC) in New South Wales, the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) in Victoria, the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Each is set by a state authority: NESA, VCAA, QCAA and SCSA respectively.

University entry is mainly based on the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), calculated from Year 12 results by the state admissions centres. Some schools also offer the IB Diploma, which can be converted to an ATAR.

We publish dedicated HSC and VCE course pages; students taking the QCE or WACE can still work with us in maths, sciences and English, since much of the content overlaps. All lessons are online, scheduled in your local time.

Sitting exams

Year 12 students sit their state's external exams at school, usually in October and November, alongside school-based assessment that counts towards their results. IB exams are taken at IB World Schools. ATARs are released in December through each state's tertiary admissions centre.

School calendar

The school year runs in four terms from late January or early February to mid-December, with a two-week break between terms and the long summer holiday over Christmas and January. Year 12 external exams take place in October and November. Daylight saving applies in New South Wales and Victoria but not in Queensland or Western Australia.

Questions from families in Australia

Do you offer online tutoring for Australian high school students?

Yes, we offer live online tutoring for Australian students in Years 7 to 12, with a focus on Year 11 and 12 maths, sciences and English for the HSC, VCE and other state certificates. Lessons are scheduled in your local time. Tell us your state, year and subjects, and we will match a tutor.

How much does an online tutor cost in Australia?

Our online tutoring fees for Australia are listed in AUD on our pricing page. The cost depends on the year level, whether your child has one-to-one or small-group lessons, and how many sessions a week you book. Because all lessons are online, there are no travel costs.

Do you tutor for the HSC and VCE?

Yes, we tutor HSC and VCE students in subjects such as Mathematics Advanced, Extension 1, Methods, Specialist, Chemistry, Physics and English. Tutors work from the NESA and VCAA syllabuses and study designs, and practise with past exams and marking guidelines. Tell us your subjects and school assessment schedule.

Can you help Queensland and Western Australian students?

Yes, we help QCE students in Queensland and WACE students in Western Australia in maths, sciences and English, even though we don't publish separate QCE or WACE pages. Much of the content overlaps with courses our tutors teach. Tell us your subjects and units, and we will match a suitable tutor.

Are online tutors as good as in-person tutors in Australia?

Online tutors can be as effective as in-person tutors for secondary students, especially in maths and sciences, where shared whiteboards make working easy to follow. Online lessons also widen the choice of specialists. Some younger children do better with someone in the room. We teach online only and do not offer home visits.
