How do schools and exams work in Canada?
Education in Canada is run by each province, so high school diplomas and course names differ. In Ontario, students earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) by completing 30 credits, meeting the literacy requirement and doing community involvement hours; university admission is based mainly on Grade 12 U and M courses. British Columbia awards the Dogwood Diploma with provincial graduation assessments, and Alberta has diploma exams in key Grade 12 courses.
Many Canadian high schools also offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses or the IB Diploma Programme, which can earn university credit or strengthen applications. Students applying to US universities may also take the SAT.
We currently publish a dedicated Ontario course page; students in British Columbia, Alberta and other provinces can still work with us in maths, sciences and English, as the core content overlaps closely. Tell us your province and courses, and we will match a tutor who knows them. All lessons are online.

Most assessment in Canadian high schools is set by the school, with provincial tests at certain points: Ontario's literacy requirement (usually met through the OSSLT) and EQAO Grade 9 maths assessment, British Columbia's graduation numeracy and literacy assessments, and Alberta's diploma exams. AP exams are taken in May at schools that offer them, and IB exams are taken at IB World Schools. SAT test centres are listed on the College Board website.
School calendar
The school year runs from early September to late June. Many Ontario secondary schools use a semester system, with final assessments in late January and June. March Break falls in mid-March in Ontario, and British Columbia schools usually take a two-week spring break in March. AP exams run in the first half of May.

Questions from families in Canada
Do you offer online tutoring for high school students in Canada?
Yes, we offer live online tutoring for Canadian high school students in maths, sciences and English, as well as AP, IB and SAT preparation. Lessons are scheduled in your local time zone, whether you are in Ontario, British Columbia or Alberta. Tell us your province, grade and courses, and we will match a suitable tutor.
How much does an online tutor cost in Canada?
Our online tutoring fees for Canada are listed in CAD on our pricing page. The cost depends on the level, such as Grade 11 and 12 courses, AP or IB, whether your child has one-to-one or small-group lessons, and how many sessions a week you book. There are no travel costs.
Do you follow the Ontario curriculum?
Yes, our Ontario tutoring follows the Ontario curriculum for Grades 9 to 12, including university-preparation courses such as MHF4U Advanced Functions, MCV4U Calculus and Vectors, SPH4U Physics and SCH4U Chemistry. Tutors work from the course expectations and help with tests, assignments and final exams.
Are online tutors as effective as in-person tutors?
Online tutors can be as effective as in-person tutors for high school students, particularly in maths and sciences, where a shared whiteboard shows every step. Online lessons also give access to specialists who may not live nearby. Some younger students focus better with someone in the room. We teach online only and do not offer home visits.
Can you help with AP or IB courses in Canada?
Yes, we help Canadian students with AP courses such as Calculus, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and with IB Diploma subjects, internal assessments and the extended essay. Tutors use the College Board course frameworks and IB subject guides. Tell us your courses and exam dates, and we will plan lessons around them.
