AP scores from 1 to 5

AP scores combine the multiple-choice and free-response sections, converted onto the 1 to 5 scale. A score of 3 is described by the College Board as qualified, and is the level many colleges use for credit. Students can choose which scores to send to universities.

Because credit rules vary, students should check the AP policy of each university they are considering.

AP exam dates and the College Board

AP exams take place in May each year, with each subject scheduled on a fixed day and time. Most AP exams are now taken digitally in the College Board's Bluebook app, with some subjects still including paper components. Students register through their school or an authorised test centre.

Students outside the USA, including in Pakistan and the Gulf, take exams at participating schools or authorised centres. Check the College Board's AP pages for the current year's schedule.

Which AP courses do we teach?

We focus on maths, science and computing courses, including AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Physics 1, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Statistics and AP Computer Science A, plus AP Microeconomics. Availability for other AP subjects depends on tutor match, so please ask.

When are AP exams and how are they graded?

  1. May exams

AP exams are held over two weeks in early to mid-May; scores are released in early July.

Late-testing dates may be available in limited cases; the College Board publishes the full schedule.

How AP is graded

Each AP exam is scored on a 1 to 5 scale: 5 is extremely well qualified, 4 well qualified, 3 qualified, 2 possibly qualified and 1 no recommendation. Many colleges grant credit or placement for a 3 or higher, although selective universities may ask for a 4 or 5. Each university sets its own AP credit policy.

How does online AP tutoring work?

We teach AP courses online in live one-to-one or small-group lessons, following the College Board's course and exam description for each subject. AP courses cover a full introductory college course in one school year, so tutors help students keep pace with the content and practise both multiple-choice and free-response questions. We pay particular attention to how free-response answers are scored, since clear reasoning earns marks.
  1. Diagnostic

A short check of what your child already knows against the syllabus.

  2. Topic teaching

Clear explanations on a shared whiteboard, one topic at a time.

  3. Past-paper practice

Exam questions from your board, timed and marked to the mark scheme.

  4. Feedback

What went well, what to fix and what to practise before next class.

AP tutoring suits students at American-curriculum schools in the Gulf, high-school students in the USA and Canada, and students in Pakistan taking AP alongside other qualifications to strengthen applications to North American universities. Lessons are scheduled in your local time, one-to-one or in small groups, and parents receive regular updates in the run-up to the May exams. A free trial class lets students meet a tutor first.

How much does AP tuition cost?

Group classes are billed monthly; one-to-one classes per class or in monthly packs.

AP questions parents ask

What is a good AP score?

A score of 3 or higher is generally considered a good AP score, because many colleges grant credit or placement from 3 upwards. Selective universities may only give credit for a 4 or 5. Each university publishes its own AP credit policy, so the best target depends on where the student plans to apply.

When are AP exams held?

AP exams are held over two weeks in May every year, and scores are usually released in early July. Each subject has a fixed date and time set by the College Board. Check the College Board's AP exam calendar for the current year's schedule.

Can I take AP exams in Pakistan or the Gulf?

Yes, students in Pakistan and the Gulf can take AP exams at participating schools or authorised test centres. Students at American-curriculum schools usually register through their school. Others need to find a centre that accepts external students, ideally well before the autumn registration deadlines. We can provide the tutoring alongside.

What is the difference between AP Calculus AB and BC?

AP Calculus BC covers all of AP Calculus AB plus additional topics, including series, parametric equations, polar coordinates and vector-valued functions. BC moves faster and suits students with strong algebra and pre-calculus. AB is a full college-level calculus course in its own right. Both are scored from 1 to 5.

How many AP courses should I take?

There is no set number of AP courses; the right amount depends on the student's school, workload and university plans. Many students take a few AP courses in subjects related to their intended major rather than as many as possible. Strong scores in a focused set of courses usually tell a clearer story than many weaker ones.

Do you tutor AP students in US and Canadian time zones?

Yes, we schedule live AP lessons in your local time, including Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific time in North America as well as Gulf and Pakistan time. Fees can be shown in your currency on our pricing page, and you can book a free trial class to check the fit with a tutor.
