Facts last verified:
O Level English Language 1123 is designed for students whose first language may not be English, and it is a standard part of the O Level programme in Pakistan. A good grade supports progression to A Level and builds the reading and writing skills every essay subject needs. Rather than set texts, the course develops transferable skills: understanding explicit and implied meaning, analysing how writers use language, summarising concisely and writing accurately for different audiences.
The exam has two papers of 2 hours each, worth 50 marks and 50% of the grade apiece. Paper 1, Reading, uses two texts: a narrative passage of around 900 words for comprehension and language questions, and a second text for a summary of no more than 150 words and a short response. Paper 2, Writing, has a directed writing task of 250–350 words based on short source texts, and a composition of 350–450 words from descriptive and narrative titles.
Students most often lose marks by copying phrases instead of using their own words, by writing summaries that exceed the limit or include examples, and by treating directed writing as a free essay rather than using and evaluating the given material. Accuracy matters throughout, since repeated grammar and punctuation errors hold writing marks down. The analytical reading and structured writing practised in 1123 feed directly into A Level English General Paper and essay subjects such as Economics and Sociology.

What topics are in O Level English?
- 1
Comprehension of explicit and implicit meaning
Lifting whole sentences from the text instead of selecting the precise detail the question targets.
- 2
Writers' use of language and its effects
Identifying a word choice but not explaining its effect on the reader in context.
- 3
Summary writing (no more than 150 words)
Exceeding the word limit, adding examples or opinions, and copying long phrases from the text.
- 4
Short response on implicit meaning and attitude
Giving a general impression without supporting it from the text.
- 5
Directed writing: speech, email, report, letter or article
Ignoring the required format and audience, and repeating the source texts without evaluating them.
- 6
Descriptive composition
Drifting into a story instead of building a picture through precise sensory detail and atmosphere.
- 7
Narrative composition
Rushed endings and plots with too many events and no controlled structure.
- 8
Spelling, punctuation and grammar
Comma splices, tense shifts and misused vocabulary that limit the writing mark.

How do you get top marks in O Level English?
Spend the first ten minutes of Paper 1 reading both texts carefully; most reading marks depend on precise selection, not speed.
For the summary, list the relevant points first, then write them in your own words as continuous prose within 150 words.
In language questions, quote the word or phrase, explain its meaning in context and then its effect on the reader.
In directed writing, use every bullet point in the task and evaluate the source material rather than simply repeating it.
Plan each composition for five minutes: a clear structure and a controlled ending outperform a long, unplanned piece.
Leave time to proofread Paper 2, correcting spelling, punctuation and paragraphing before the end.

O Level English FAQs
How many papers are in O Level English 1123?
O Level English Language 1123 has two papers, each lasting 2 hours and worth 50 marks, so each is 50% of the grade. Paper 1 is Reading, with comprehension, language, summary and short-response questions on two texts. Paper 2 is Writing, with one directed writing task and one descriptive or narrative composition.
How can I improve my O Level English Language grade?
The quickest way to improve an O Level English Language grade is to practise each task type separately against the mark scheme, then combine them under timed conditions. Summary concision, explaining the effect of language and evaluating sources in directed writing are where many students gain marks. Reading widely and correcting recurring grammar errors helps steadily over time.
What is the word limit for the summary in O Level English?
The summary in O Level English Language 1123 Paper 1 must be no more than 150 words, written as continuous prose. It is based on a second text of roughly 550–600 words and is worth 20 marks, combining reading and writing marks. Writing beyond the limit, adding opinions or copying the text closely are the usual reasons students lose marks.
Is O Level English Language hard?
O Level English Language is very manageable for students who practise regularly, but it is hard to cram because the skills develop slowly. Students often find the language-effects question and the summary most difficult. A steady routine of reading, timed tasks and targeted feedback usually produces better results than intensive last-minute revision.
What is the difference between O Level English 1123 and IGCSE First Language English?
O Level English 1123 is designed for students whose first language may not be English, while IGCSE First Language English 0500 assumes fluent, first-language users and works with longer, more demanding tasks. Both test reading and writing through comprehension, summary, directed writing and composition. Cambridge does not allow the two to be taken in the same exam series.
Can I take O Level English as a private candidate?
Yes, private candidates can enter for O Level English Language 1123. In Pakistan, private entries are usually made through the British Council, with registration deadlines several months before each series. Our tutors can prepare private candidates for both papers, but registration itself is handled by the exam centre, not by us.
