Which IGCSE boards do schools in the UAE use?

  • Cambridge IGCSE (Cambridge International Education)

Graded A* to G on most syllabuses, with Core and Extended routes in subjects such as Mathematics (0580), Physics (0625), Chemistry (0620) and Biology (0610). Cambridge confirmed that IGCSE students in the UAE received grades for June 2026, so the board is in active use in UAE schools.

  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Graded 9 to 1, with Foundation and Higher tiers in subjects such as Mathematics A (4MA1). Pearson's May/June 2026 arrangements for International GCSE students in UAE schools confirm that the board is also entered locally.

When are IGCSE exams for students in the UAE?

Full calendar by board on our exam dates page.
SessionWhat applies in the UAE
Cambridge June seriesThe main Cambridge series for UAE schools. Results for June 2026 IGCSE were released on 18 August 2026. Results for each June series are released in August.
Cambridge November seriesUsed for resits and by some private candidates. Cambridge IGCSE results for November 2026 are due on 14 January 2027.
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE: May/June and NovemberAll International GCSE subjects run in May/June. Since 2024 the November series has been the only other opportunity, covering a smaller set of subjects that includes Mathematics A, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English Language A. For 2026, Pearson sent International GCSE results to students on 20 August.

Where do students in the UAE sit IGCSE exams?

Students at British-curriculum schools are entered for IGCSE by their own school, which is the registered exam centre.

Private candidates register with a centre or approved exam provider in the UAE that accepts private candidates, not with Cambridge directly. Cambridge's centre finder shows which schools accept private candidates, and the British Council supports private-candidate entries in more than 45 countries.

Some Cambridge syllabuses or options are not available to private candidates; the syllabus document for each subject says which ones are.

For the May/June 2026 series, Pearson said it was working with local authorities and delivery partners such as the British Council on options for private candidates in the countries where exams were cancelled, including the UAE.

Do UAE schools use Cambridge or Edexcel for IGCSE?

Both. Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE are both entered by British-curriculum schools in the UAE, and the board can differ from one subject to the next, so check each subject separately. The quickest way to check is the syllabus code on your child's entry or timetable: four digits starting with 0 (such as 0580 or 0625) is Cambridge, while codes such as 4MA1 or 4PH1 are Pearson Edexcel.

The content overlaps, but the papers do not. Cambridge Mathematics 0580 uses Core and Extended routes, while Pearson 4MA1 uses Foundation and Higher tiers, and the grading scales differ (A* to G against 9 to 1). Our tutors work from the board your school has chosen and practise with that board's past papers only.

What happened to IGCSE exams in the UAE in June 2026?

Cambridge International confirmed that, for the June 2026 series, IGCSE, O Level and AS & A Level qualifications in the UAE (as well as Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar) would be awarded through a portfolio of evidence instead of written exams. IGCSE results were released on 18 August 2026, and Cambridge says students can appeal through its enquiries service.

Pearson cancelled May/June 2026 exams in schools in the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar and awarded International GCSE grades through its contingency arrangements. For students now in Year 11, the practical lesson is to keep classwork, mock papers and coursework strong throughout the year, because that evidence mattered in 2026.

Can a homeschooled student in the UAE take IGCSE exams?

Yes. A homeschooled student sits IGCSE as a private candidate at a centre that accepts private candidates, registering directly with that centre and paying its fees. Choose the board and syllabus first, because some Cambridge syllabuses or options are not open to private candidates, and coursework-based options are usually harder to arrange.

We tutor homeschooled students online against the exact syllabus they will be entered for, and plan the course backwards from the centre's registration deadline, which normally falls several months before the exams.

What times are online IGCSE classes in the UAE?

Private schools in the UAE are regulated by emirate: KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi and SPEA in Sharjah, with the Ministry of Education covering the northern emirates. Check your regulator's school listing to confirm a school's curriculum and whether it is a Cambridge or Pearson centre.

British-curriculum schools in the UAE usually teach IGCSE across Years 10 and 11. Coursework, practical and speaking components are completed in school before the written papers, and in 2026 Pearson granted a two-week extension to those deadlines for Middle East centres affected by closures.

Classes run in Gulf Standard Time (UTC+4). Because the UAE does not change its clocks, the gap to UK time changes from three hours in summer (BST) to four hours in winter (GMT), which matters when you check Cambridge or Pearson release times given in UK time.

Weekdays after school

IGCSE questions from families in the UAE

Do you tutor both Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE for UAE students?

Yes, we tutor both Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE for students across the UAE. Send us the syllabus code from your child's school, such as 0580 for Cambridge Mathematics or 4MA1 for Edexcel Mathematics A, and we will match a tutor who teaches that exact specification and uses that board's past papers and mark schemes.

When are IGCSE exams and results in the UAE?

Most UAE students sit IGCSE in the May/June series, with results in August. Cambridge also runs a November series, with IGCSE results for November 2026 due on 14 January 2027, and Pearson Edexcel runs a smaller November series. Your school or exam centre confirms the exact timetable for each subject you are entered for.

Were IGCSE exams cancelled in the UAE in 2026?

Yes, written exams did not go ahead in the UAE for the May/June 2026 series. Cambridge awarded IGCSE grades through a portfolio of evidence, and Pearson awarded International GCSE grades through its contingency arrangements. Results were issued in August 2026, and students who disagree with a grade can ask their school about the boards' review and appeal routes.

Can my child take IGCSE as a private candidate in the UAE?

Yes, private candidates can take IGCSE in the UAE by registering with a centre or approved exam provider that accepts private candidates. Families register with the centre rather than with Cambridge or Pearson, and pay the centre's fees. Check early which syllabuses the centre offers, because some options are not available to private candidates and deadlines fall months before exams.

What time are online IGCSE classes in the UAE?

Online IGCSE classes run in Gulf Standard Time, usually between about 3pm and 9pm on school days and from morning to early evening at weekends. In the weeks before the May/June and November series we can add extra past-paper sessions. During Ramadan, lessons can move to after iftar. Exact slots depend on tutor availability.

Is Cambridge IGCSE graded differently from Edexcel International GCSE?

Yes, Cambridge IGCSE is mostly graded A* to G, while Pearson Edexcel International GCSE is graded 9 to 1, with 9 the highest. Both use tiers: Cambridge has Core and Extended routes, and Pearson has Foundation and Higher. The tier your school chooses caps the top grade available, so it matters as much as the board.
