IGCSE in the UAE & Saudi Arabia: A Parent's Guide to Boards, Exams and Tutoring
By Heights Academic TeamPublished Last updated 9 min read
Key takeaways
Most British-curriculum schools in the UAE and Saudi Arabia teach Cambridge IGCSE (graded A* to G, with Core and Extended tiers) or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (graded 9 to 1, with Foundation and Higher tiers). School candidates sit exams at school, and private candidates register through the British Council in either country.
- Cambridge IGCSE Core candidates in Mathematics 0580 can only reach grade C; Extended entry is needed for A or A*.
- In June 2026, Cambridge awarded grades in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE through a portfolio of evidence instead of written exams. Saudi Arabia was not included.
- Cambridge releases November 2026 IGCSE results on 14 January 2027 at 06:00 UTC (10:00 in the UAE, 09:00 in Saudi Arabia).
- KHDA (Dubai), ADEK (Abu Dhabi) and SPEA (Sharjah) regulate private schools; Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Education oversees international schools.
- IBCC accepts IGCSE for Matric equivalence: students who sat exams abroad need five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

Which IGCSE boards do schools in the UAE and Saudi Arabia use?
British-curriculum schools in the UAE and Saudi Arabia mostly teach one of two qualifications: Cambridge IGCSE, set by Cambridge International Education, or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE. Some schools also use OxfordAQA. A school can use different boards for different subjects, so parents should check the board and syllabus code for each subject, not just for the school.
Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a two-year qualification for students aged about 14 to 16. Cambridge offers over 70 subjects and says it aligns IGCSE standards with the GCSE taken in England. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE is Pearson's equivalent for schools outside the UK. Pearson describes it as designed specifically for international learners.
The British Council runs exams for all three boards for private candidates, both in the UAE and in Saudi Arabia.
For a country-by-country overview of schools and exam centres, see our pages on IGCSE in the UAE and IGCSE in Saudi Arabia.
What is the difference between Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel International GCSE?
The main differences between Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE are grading and tiers. Cambridge IGCSE is mostly graded A* to G, with Core and Extended options in some subjects. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE is graded 9 to 1, with Foundation and Higher tiers in some subjects. Both are accepted as GCSE-level qualifications.
| Feature | Cambridge IGCSE | Pearson Edexcel International GCSE |
|---|---|---|
| Awarding body | Cambridge International Education | Pearson Edexcel |
| Grading | A* to G (9–1 versions exist for some subjects, with separate codes) | 9 to 1, with 9 the highest |
| Tiers | Core and Extended in some subjects, such as Mathematics 0580 | Foundation and Higher in some subjects, such as Mathematics A |
| Grades available by tier (maths) | Core: C to G. Extended: A* to E | Foundation: 5 to 1. Higher: 9 to 4 |

Why the tier decision matters
The tier decision is the most important exam-entry choice parents will face. The Cambridge 0580 syllabus says candidates who study the Core content are eligible for grades C to G only. In Pearson's Mathematics A, the Foundation tier only goes up to grade 5. For a child who wants to take A Level maths or science, Extended or Higher entry is effectively essential.
Schools usually decide tiers in Year 11, often after mocks, so if your child is borderline, ask early which tier they are working towards. Our IGCSE Mathematics and IGCSE Physics pages explain each paper in more detail.
Who regulates British-curriculum schools in the UAE and Saudi Arabia?
In the UAE, each emirate has its own private school regulator. In Dubai it is the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), in Abu Dhabi the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), and in Sharjah the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA). In Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Education licenses and supervises international schools.
According to the UAE government portal, Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge regulates private education in that emirate. The Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. These regulators license and inspect schools; the exams themselves are set and marked by Cambridge, Pearson and OxfordAQA.
In Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Education oversees international schools that teach a foreign curriculum, including British-curriculum schools that offer IGCSE. Its regulations give these schools flexibility over their timetables and calendars, so term dates vary from school to school.
When are IGCSE exams and results in the Gulf?
In the Gulf, Cambridge IGCSE exams run in two main series, May/June and October/November, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams also run in May/June and November. Cambridge will release November 2026 IGCSE results on 14 January 2027. June results normally arrive in August.
Most school candidates sit the May/June series at the end of Year 11; November is often used for resits. Cambridge's help centre confirms that November 2026 results will be released on 7 January 2027 for AS and A Level, and on 14 January 2027 for IGCSE and O Level, at 06:00 UTC. That is 10:00 in the UAE and 09:00 in Saudi Arabia.
Cambridge publishes a separate timetable for each administrative zone, so use the timetable your school or the British Council gives you. Our exam dates and IGCSE grade thresholds pages collect the official links in one place.
What happened to IGCSE exams in the Gulf in June 2026?
In the June 2026 series, Cambridge did not hold written exams in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar or the United Arab Emirates. Cambridge said this was because of "the current situation in parts of the Middle East". It awarded IGCSE, O Level and AS and A Level grades through its portfolio of evidence route. Saudi Arabia was not on Cambridge's list.
The portfolio of evidence route is Cambridge's established contingency measure. Grades are based on a range of the student's validated work instead of exam papers. Cambridge asked universities to treat these grades as equivalent to grades from external exams, and the usual enquiries about results service remained available. IGCSE and O Level results were released on 18 August 2026.
Pearson also cancelled May/June 2026 exams in schools in Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar. It awarded grades through its contingency arrangements, which can draw on evidence such as mock exams and other assessed work.
At the time of writing, the British Council in the UAE is taking registrations for the October/November 2026 series as normal. Arrangements can still change at short notice, so check with your school or the British Council before each series.
Can my child sit IGCSE as a private candidate in the UAE or Saudi Arabia?
Yes. The British Council registers private candidates for Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA exams in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Families register online through the British Council's School Exams Registration System, pay the exam fees and receive a Statement of Entry with venue details about three weeks before the exams.
The British Council's published steps compared:
| Step | UAE (British Council UAE) | Saudi Arabia (British Council Saudi Arabia) |
|---|---|---|
| Register | Online via the School Exams Registration System | Online via the School Registration System (SRS) |
| Pay | Online, or by cash or card at a British Council centre in the UAE | Online, by bank draft, or in cash via British Council customer services |
| Documents | Email a copy of the Emirates ID or passport used to register. School candidates entering through the British Council also need a No Objection Certificate. Resit candidates need previous results | Forms are available on the registration page for amendments, cancellations and results dispatch |
| Confirmation | Statement of Entry and venue details about three weeks before exams | Statement of Entry and venue details about three weeks before exams |
| Late entry | Possible after the normal deadline, with a penalty fee | Possible after the normal deadline, with additional fees |
For the October/November 2026 series, the British Council in the UAE listed regular Cambridge registration from 26 June to 7 August 2026. Those deadlines have now passed. Deadlines for the May/June 2027 series will be published on the same pages. Fees vary by board, subject and entry stage; check the current figures in the registration system. In Saudi Arabia, special arrangements must be requested at least six weeks before the exam, via the exam organiser or the British Council offices in Riyadh, Jeddah or Al Khobar.
Private candidates should also ask which practical or coursework components they can take.
Is IGCSE the same as O Level for families moving between the Gulf and Pakistan?
Yes. Cambridge treats Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge O Level as equivalent grade for grade. Pakistan's Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC) accepts both for Matric (SSC) equivalence. For students who sat their exams abroad, IBCC requires five subjects, including English and Mathematics, with at least grade E in each.
This matters for the many Pakistani families in the UAE and Saudi Arabia who may return home for A Levels, FSc or university. According to IBCC's rules for British qualifications, a student who sits IGCSE from the Gulf needs English, Mathematics and three academic electives. A student who sits from inside Pakistan needs eight subjects, including Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies. If a move is likely, plan subject choices with this in mind.
Our guide to IGCSE vs O Level explains the remaining differences. You can also estimate equivalent marks with our free, unofficial IBCC equivalence calculator.
How do Gulf time zones and weekends affect IGCSE tutoring?
The UAE uses Gulf Standard Time (GST, UTC+4) and Saudi Arabia uses Arabia Standard Time (AST, UTC+3). Neither country uses daylight saving time. The UAE weekend is Saturday and Sunday, while Saudi Arabia's weekend is Friday and Saturday, so online lessons are best booked in local time.
A few practical points for scheduling:
- Weekday evenings suit most students. A 6 pm lesson in Dubai is 5 pm in Riyadh, so small groups can span both countries.
- Weekends differ. A Saturday morning lesson works for both countries. Friday suits Saudi families, and Sunday suits UAE families. Sharjah's private schools run Monday to Thursday, which leaves Friday free as well.
- Ramadan shortens school days, and many families prefer lessons after iftar. In 2027, Ramadan is expected to fall in February and March, during the run-up to the May/June series. Plan revision so that the heaviest weeks do not clash with it.
- Summer before Year 11 is a good time to close gaps before tier decisions are made.
When does an IGCSE student in the Gulf need a tutor?
An IGCSE student in the UAE or Saudi Arabia may benefit from a tutor if mock grades fall below target, if the school is considering a Core or Foundation entry, if they have switched boards or countries, or if they are entering as a private candidate. The right tutor knows the exact board and syllabus code.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Mock results below the grade needed for A Level subject choices.
- A teacher mentioning Core or Foundation entry in maths or a science.
- A recent move from a Pakistani, Indian or Ministry curriculum, where question styles and command words differ.
- Private candidate preparation without a school's structure.
When you choose a tutor, ask which boards and syllabus codes they have taught, how they track progress, and what safeguarding measures are in place. Our safeguarding page sets out what parents should expect from online lessons.

Frequently asked questions
Is IGCSE recognised in the UAE and Saudi Arabia?
Yes, IGCSE is widely taught in licensed British-curriculum schools in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Cambridge says leading universities and employers worldwide accept Cambridge IGCSE, and Pearson describes its International GCSEs as globally recognised. University entry in the Gulf usually depends more on A Level or equivalent results, so check each university's own requirements and any certificate equivalency rules with the relevant education ministry.
Can my child sit IGCSE privately in Dubai?
Yes, a child in Dubai can sit IGCSE privately by registering with the British Council in the UAE, which accepts private entries for Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA exams. Registration is online, fees must be paid before entries are processed, and late entries carry a penalty fee. A Statement of Entry with the venue arrives about three weeks before the exams.
Should my child take Core or Extended IGCSE?
Choose Extended if your child is aiming for grade C or above, especially in maths or the sciences. In Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, Core candidates can only achieve grades C to G, while Extended candidates can reach A*. Students planning A Level maths, sciences, engineering or medicine should be entered for Extended. Schools usually confirm tiers in Year 11, often after mock exams.
When are IGCSE results released?
Cambridge IGCSE results for the November 2026 series will be released on 14 January 2027 at 06:00 UTC, which is 10:00 in the UAE and 09:00 in Saudi Arabia. June series results normally come out in August; in 2026, IGCSE and O Level results were released on 18 August. Pearson Edexcel sets its own results dates, which schools and the British Council publish.
Were IGCSE exams cancelled in the UAE in 2026?
Yes, written IGCSE exams for the June 2026 series did not go ahead in the UAE. Cambridge awarded grades in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE through its portfolio of evidence route, and Pearson cancelled May/June 2026 exams in schools in the same four countries. Cambridge has asked universities to treat these grades as equivalent to exam grades.
Can IGCSE students join Pakistani colleges and universities?
Yes, IGCSE students can continue their education in Pakistan after getting an equivalence certificate from the Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC). Students who sat IGCSE abroad, for example in Dubai or Riyadh, need five subjects for Matric (SSC) equivalence, including English and Mathematics, with at least grade E. Universities then set their own admission criteria on top of equivalence.
What is the difference between IGCSE and GCSE?
IGCSE is designed for international students, while GCSE follows England's national curriculum and is taken mainly in UK schools. Cambridge aligns IGCSE standards with the GCSE taken in England, and Pearson's International GCSE uses the same 9 to 1 grading as English GCSEs. UK universities generally accept both as GCSE-level evidence, and Gulf British-curriculum schools may teach either.
