Facts last verified:

IGCSE Business Studies is popular with students who enjoy practical, real-world topics and may be heading for business, management, marketing or entrepreneurship. Families in the Gulf often value it alongside Economics and Accounting. Cambridge has renamed its course Business, changing the code from 0450 to 0264 for first assessment in March 2027 (in India) and June 2027 elsewhere. Edexcel's 4BS1 bases its two papers on scenarios involving a small business and a large business.

Cambridge uses two 1 hour 30 minute papers of 80 marks each, worth 50% apiece: Paper 1 is short answer and data response, and Paper 2 is built around a case study insert, both with four compulsory questions. Edexcel 4BS1 also has two 1 hour 30 minute papers of 80 marks, worth 50% each: Paper 1 is set around a small business of up to 49 employees and Paper 2 around a large business with more than 250 employees.

Students lose most marks through generic answers that ignore the business in the question, recommendations without justification, and calculation errors in break-even, cash flow and ratio questions. Edexcel students must also adapt their answers to the scale of the business on each paper. IGCSE Business leads directly to A Level Business and IB Business Management, where case-study analysis and evaluation carry even more weight.

How do you get top marks in IGCSE Business?

  • Quote facts and figures from the scenario in every applied answer, naming the business where possible.

  • For recommendation questions, weigh two options, choose one and justify it with evidence from the case.

  • Lay out calculations step by step with formulas, and label currency and percentages.

  • For Edexcel, adapt answers to the scale of the business: small-business and large-business scenarios call for different choices.

  • Use the marks as a guide to depth, keeping 'identify' answers brief and developing 'evaluate' answers fully.

  • Read the full case insert before writing, highlighting data you can use in later questions.

IGCSE Business FAQs

Has IGCSE Business Studies 0450 been replaced?

Yes, Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450 is being replaced by Cambridge IGCSE Business 0264, with first assessment in March 2027 in India and June 2027 elsewhere. The new title matches A Level Business 9609. The two-paper structure is unchanged, with 1 hour 30 minute papers worth 80 marks each.

How many papers are there in IGCSE Business Studies?

IGCSE Business has two papers with both main boards, each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes, worth 80 marks and 50% of the grade. Cambridge uses a short answer and data response paper and a case study paper. Edexcel 4BS1 uses one paper based on a small business and one based on a large business.

Is IGCSE Business Studies easy?

IGCSE Business Studies feels approachable because the topics relate to everyday life, but top grades are not easy. Marks depend on applying ideas to the specific business, analysing consequences and justifying decisions. Students who practise case-study answers regularly and learn the formulas thoroughly usually do well.

What is the difference between Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE Business?

Cambridge IGCSE Business (0264, formerly 0450) has a short answer and data response paper and a case study paper, graded A* to G. Edexcel International GCSE Business 4BS1 has two papers built around a small business and a large business, graded 9 to 1. Both cover similar content, so the choice depends on your school.

Is IGCSE Business useful for A Level Business?

Yes, IGCSE Business is very useful preparation for A Level Business and IB Business Management, because it introduces the key functional areas and case-study technique. Students without it can still start A Level Business, but they should expect to spend extra time on terminology and finance in the first term.

How can I get an A* or a 9 in IGCSE Business?

Students who achieve an A* or 9 in IGCSE Business consistently apply concepts to the case, develop analysis and reach justified conclusions. Accurate calculations and confident use of formulas also matter. Timed past-paper practice reviewed against mark schemes sharpens these skills. We coach this approach but never promise grades.
