Which IB boards do schools in the UAE use?

  • IB Diploma Programme (DP)

Offered by 57 schools in the UAE according to ibo.org. Students take six subjects, usually three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS, and are registered for exams by their school's DP coordinator.

  • IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)

  • IB Career-related Programme (CP)

When are IB exams for students in the UAE?

Full calendar by board on our exam dates page.
SessionWhat applies in the UAE
May sessionThe session taken by UAE IB World Schools on a northern-hemisphere calendar. Results are released on the candidate website from 12.00 GMT on 6 July, which is 4pm in the UAE.
November sessionUsed mainly by schools in the southern hemisphere and for retakes. The IB's assessment FAQ states that November-session results are issued to schools on 16 December; check the exact time with the school's DP coordinator.
May 2026 in the Middle EastThe IB said that most May 2026 exams in the region were expected to proceed, that decisions were made by national or local authorities, and that its Non-Exam Contingency Measure, based on externally assessed coursework and teacher-predicted grades, could be applied as a last resort. The IB did not publish country-level detail, so ask your school what applied.

Where do students in the UAE sit IB exams?

There is no private-candidate route to the IB Diploma. Students must be registered by an IB World School for each exam session, and registration is handled by the school's DP coordinator.

Students who want to retake a subject can do so in a later session at any IB World School offering the Diploma Programme, but the IB says schools are under no obligation to accept retake candidates. Speak to the DP coordinator at your own school first.

Results are accessed on the IB candidate website using a personal code and PIN, which students obtain from their programme coordinator.

How many IB schools are there in the UAE?

According to the IB's country page for the UAE, checked on 1 October 2026, 64 IB World Schools in the UAE offer one or more IB programmes. The Diploma Programme is offered by 57 of them, the Primary Years Programme by 39, the Middle Years Programme by 31 and the Career-related Programme by 23. There has been an IB World School in the UAE since 1992.

With that many Diploma schools, IB students in the UAE work to the same subject guides and assessment criteria but with different internal deadlines, mock-exam schedules and subject offers. We build each student's tutoring plan around their own school's IA deadlines and mock dates.

Can you take the IB Diploma as a private candidate in the UAE?

No. The IB states that only students enrolled in authorised IB World Schools can earn the Diploma, with registration for each exam session made by the school's DP coordinator. Students cannot register themselves, and it is not possible to earn the full Diploma online outside an IB World School.

Retaking a subject is possible in a later session at any IB World School that offers the Diploma, but schools do not have to accept retake candidates. If you are considering a retake, talk to your school first, and use tutoring to prepare for the papers and, where the rules allow, to improve the internal assessment.

How were May 2026 IB exams handled in the Middle East?

On 31 March 2026 the IB said most May 2026 exams in the Middle East were expected to go ahead, with coursework deadline extensions, access arrangements and options to defer for affected students. Where exams could not be held safely, government authorities could decide to apply the IB's Non-Exam Contingency Measure, which bases results on externally assessed coursework and teacher-predicted grades.

The IB did not publish which route applied in each country, so UAE families should check with their school how their 2026 results were awarded. For current Year 1 and Year 2 students, the lesson is the same either way: strong internal assessments and realistic predicted grades protect a student whatever happens to the exam session.

What times are online IB classes in the UAE?

IB World Schools in the UAE are private schools regulated by the emirate's authority, such as KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi and SPEA in Sharjah. Use the IB's 'find an IB World School' directory to confirm which programmes a school is authorised to teach.

Most UAE IB schools follow a northern-hemisphere year from late August to early July, so Year 1 of the Diploma starts in late August and final exams fall in May of Year 2. Internal assessment deadlines in the autumn and spring of Year 2 are usually the busiest periods for students.

Classes run in Gulf Standard Time (UTC+4). IB results release times are given in GMT, so 12.00 GMT on 6 July is 4pm in the UAE.

In Qatar, ibo.org lists 21 IB World Schools, 17 of which offer the Diploma Programme (checked 1 October 2026). Qatar runs on Arabia Standard Time (UTC+3), one hour behind the UAE, and we schedule lessons for students there in local time too.
