IB Business Management appeals to students considering business, management, marketing, accounting, finance, hospitality and entrepreneurship degrees, and it pairs well with economics or Maths AI. The guide, first assessed in 2024, has five units: introduction to business management, human resource management, finance and accounts, marketing, and operations management. A business management toolkit of analytical tools runs through all five units, and the course is framed by four key concepts: change, creativity, ethics and sustainability.
At SL, Paper 1 is a 90-minute paper on an unseen case study based on a statement released before the exam, worth 35%. Paper 2 is a 90-minute quantitative paper built on unseen stimulus material, also worth 35%, and the business research project internal assessment contributes 30%. HL students sit Paper 1 at 25%, a longer Paper 2 of 1 hour 45 minutes at 30%, a Paper 3 of 1 hour 15 minutes on an unseen social enterprise at 25%, and the research project at 20%.
Learners coming from IGCSE or GCSE Business Studies, or from MYP individuals and societies, recognise much of the vocabulary but are less used to applying tools such as SWOT analysis or decision trees to an unfamiliar organisation. Finance questions, especially ratio analysis and investment appraisal, cost many students marks through small errors. Paper 1 also rewards those who research the pre-released context thoroughly. We practise calculations step by step and help students turn case-study facts into balanced, justified recommendations.

How do you get top marks in IB Business Management?
Research the context of the Paper 1 pre-released statement thoroughly, but answer from the case material given on the day.
In Paper 2, set out calculations clearly with formulae and currency units so method marks are available.
Apply every point to the named business, because generic textbook answers earn little credit.
End evaluation questions with a justified judgement that weighs short-term against long-term effects.
Use toolkit tools only when they add insight, and always interpret what their results show.
Manage time by matching the length of each answer to the marks available.

IB Business Management FAQs
Is IB Business Management HL worth it?
IB Business Management HL is worthwhile if you enjoy applying ideas to real organisations and plan to study business or a related degree, though requirements vary, so check each university's published entry requirements. HL adds a longer quantitative paper and the social enterprise Paper 3. Students who prefer economic theory may find IB Economics a better fit for their HL choice.
What is the IB Business Management IA?
The IB Business Management IA is a business research project in which you investigate a real issue facing an organisation, and it contributes 30% at SL and 20% at HL. You use evidence and toolkit techniques to analyse the issue and reach conclusions, connecting your work to a key concept. A focused research question, agreed early, makes the project much easier to manage.
Is IB Business Management or Economics harder?
Neither is universally harder: IB Economics is more theoretical and diagram-based, while IB Business Management focuses on applying tools and calculations to case studies of organisations. Students who like abstract models often prefer economics, whereas those who enjoy practical problem-solving tend to prefer business. Both reward clear evaluation, so strong writing skills help in either course.
What is the pre-released statement in IB Business Management?
The pre-released statement is a short piece of information about the Paper 1 case study that is made available before the exam, giving students time to research the context. The full case study and its questions remain unseen until the exam itself. Researching the industry and practising questions on similar organisations helps you respond confidently on the day.
How do I get a 7 in IB Business Management?
No technique guarantees a 7, but applying every answer to the case, mastering finance calculations and making justified recommendations form a strong foundation. Practise past papers under timed conditions and compare your answers with mark schemes to see how application and evaluation are credited. A well-structured business research project with a clear question also makes a substantial contribution.
Do I need IB Business Management for a business degree?
IB Business Management is helpful but often not a required subject for business degrees, since requirements vary and many focus on overall Diploma performance or mathematics, so check each university's published entry requirements. Taking the subject still gives useful background in finance, marketing and strategy. Students aiming for finance-heavy courses should pay particular attention to mathematics requirements.
