Facts last verified:

A Level Business appeals to students considering business management, marketing, finance, hospitality, law or entrepreneurship, and to those who simply want to understand how organisations make decisions. No prior study is required, although IGCSE or O Level Business Studies gives useful vocabulary. The subject rewards curiosity about real companies: students who follow business news find it far easier to apply theory to the unfamiliar firms that appear in case studies.

Cambridge 9609 is staged. The AS Level has a short-answer and essay paper plus a data-response paper, and the full A Level adds a case-study decision-making paper and a business strategy paper. AQA 7132 and Edexcel 9BS0 are linear qualifications with three two-hour papers each, mixing multiple-choice or short questions, data response and extended essays. Edexcel's third paper is based on a context document released in advance by the board.

Students often know the theory but lose marks because their answers could apply to any business. Top responses use evidence from the case, such as a falling margin or a staff-turnover figure, to support each point. Ratio, break-even, investment-appraisal and cash-flow calculations also need careful working. Our tutors teach a repeatable approach to case material, rehearse calculations until they are reliable and practise evaluative conclusions that weigh short-term against long-term consequences.

How do you get top marks in A Level Business?

  • Underline the business name and key data in the case before writing, and refer to both in every paragraph.

  • Show the formula, the substituted figures and the units for every calculation, then interpret the result.

  • Match the length of your answer to the marks: short definitions for low-mark items, developed chains of reasoning for essays.

  • End evaluative answers with a recommendation that states what the business should do and what it depends on.

  • Keep a bank of current business examples so you can support essay points with real evidence.

A Level Business FAQs

How can I get an A* in A Level Business?

An A* in A Level Business comes from applying theory closely to each case study and finishing answers with justified, context-specific judgements. Learn key terms and calculations thoroughly, then practise past papers under time pressure. Compare your responses with mark-scheme level descriptors to see how application and evaluation are rewarded. Reading business news keeps your examples current.

Is A Level Business easy?

A Level Business is not easy, although its concepts feel familiar because they relate to everyday organisations. The challenge lies in applying theory to unseen case material, carrying out accurate financial calculations and writing balanced evaluations under time pressure. Students who practise structured essays and calculations regularly usually perform well.

What is the difference between A Level Business and Economics?

A Level Business studies how individual organisations make decisions, while A Level Economics studies how markets and whole economies allocate resources. Business covers marketing, people, operations and finance inside a firm. Economics covers supply and demand, government policy, inflation and international trade. The two overlap in places, and many students take both.

Can I take A Level Business without studying it at IGCSE or O Level?

Yes, you can take A Level Business without previous study of the subject, because the AS content starts from foundations. Students who did IGCSE or O Level Business Studies recognise more terms at first, but newcomers usually catch up within a term. Reading about real companies and practising business calculations early helps close any gap quickly.

Which A Level subjects go well with Business?

Economics, Accounting, Mathematics and Psychology combine well with A Level Business. Economics adds the wider market context, Accounting deepens the finance topics, Maths supports data analysis and Psychology connects with motivation and consumer behaviour. Check the entry requirements of your intended degree, as some business and finance courses prefer Maths.
