Applications and Interpretation is designed for Diploma students who want to use mathematics to describe and predict real situations. It fits well with planned degrees in psychology, biology, geography, business, the social sciences and some health-related routes, where handling data matters more than formal proof. At Higher Level the course becomes considerably more technical, and some universities accept AI HL for selected science or economics programmes, so checking individual course requirements early is sensible.
Every AI paper permits a graphic display calculator, which changes the character of the exams compared with AA. SL candidates sit two 90-minute papers, each carrying 40%, and submit an exploration worth 20%. HL candidates take two two-hour papers at 30% each, a one-hour Paper 3 worth 20% and the same exploration at 20%. Results are reported on the familiar 1–7 scale, with exams offered in both May and November sessions.
Many students assume AI is the easy option, then discover that wordy contexts and interpretation questions cost marks quickly. Choosing an appropriate model, stating assumptions and commenting on the reliability of a result all require careful writing. Learners coming from IGCSE, GCSE or MYP mathematics often have a decent statistics background but little experience of Voronoi diagrams, chi-squared tests or financial calculations, so we build those topics deliberately and practise calculator workflows until they become routine.

What topics are in IB Maths AI?
- 1
Number and algebra: financial mathematics
Entering present and future values with the wrong signs, or the wrong compounding periods, in the finance solver.
- 2
Number and algebra: matrices, eigenvalues and complex numbers (HL)
Multiplying matrices in the wrong order, forgetting that matrix multiplication is not commutative.
- 3
Functions: modelling with functions
Choosing a model without justifying it from the shape of the data or the context.
- 4
Geometry and trigonometry: Voronoi diagrams
Constructing perpendicular bisectors inaccurately, which places a new site in the wrong cell.
- 5
Geometry and trigonometry: graph theory (HL)
Missing an edge or vertex when listing a route, so the stated total weight does not match the graph.
- 6
Statistics and probability: Spearman's rank correlation
Ranking tied values incorrectly, or reading the coefficient as evidence of a linear relationship.
- 7
Statistics and probability: chi-squared tests
Writing hypotheses that ignore the context, or using the wrong degrees of freedom.
- 8
Statistics and probability: Markov chains and transition matrices (HL)
Setting up the transition matrix with rows and columns swapped relative to the convention being used.
- 9
Calculus: the trapezoidal rule
Using the wrong number of intervals or strip width when approximating the area under a curve.
- 10
Calculus: slope fields and differential equations (HL)
Sketching solution curves that cut across slope-field segments instead of following their direction.
- 11
The mathematical exploration (internal assessment)
Collecting data without explaining how the mathematics used answers the stated aim.

How do you get top marks in IB Maths AI?
Check your graphic display calculator settings, including angle mode, before every paper.
Write down the calculator method you used, such as the regression type or test, rather than only the final number.
When asked to interpret a result, answer in a full sentence that refers back to the context, not with another number.
In hypothesis tests, compare the p-value with the significance level explicitly and state the conclusion in context.
Practise reading long contextual stems quickly and underline the quantity actually being asked for.
Store unrounded values in calculator memory and round only the final answer.

IB Maths AI FAQs
Is IB Maths AI easier than AA?
IB Maths AI is not simply easier than AA; it tests different skills, focusing on modelling, statistics and interpretation with a calculator rather than algebraic proof. Students who struggle with lengthy manipulation by hand often feel more comfortable in AI, while those who dislike wordy contexts may find it harder. At Higher Level, AI includes demanding material such as matrices, graph theory and differential equations.
Can I study medicine with IB Maths AI?
Many medical schools accept IB Maths AI, but requirements vary by university and country, so check each university's published entry requirements before deciding. Some courses specify a level or name a preferred mathematics course, while others focus mainly on chemistry and biology. Confirming these details before the Diploma begins avoids an awkward change of course later in the programme.
What calculator do I need for IB Maths AI?
You need a graphic display calculator for IB Maths AI, because every paper assumes one is available. Your school will normally recommend a permitted model and explain the exam settings that must be applied. Learning its statistics, finance and equation-solving menus early saves considerable time in exams, and our tutors build those calculator routines into ordinary lessons.
Is IB Maths AI HL hard?
Yes, IB Maths AI HL is demanding, because it adds matrices, eigenvalues, complex numbers, graph theory, Markov chains and slope fields to an already broad core. The workload is heavier than many students expect when they choose the course. Success depends on regular practice with extended contextual questions and reliable calculator technique, so it suits students willing to work steadily from the start.
What makes a good IB Maths AI exploration?
A good AI exploration answers a clear, focused question using mathematics that genuinely fits the data or situation being studied. Real data sets, sensible models and honest discussion of limitations tend to work well. Avoid projects that merely describe a topic or rely on mathematics below the course level. Tutors can help you refine an idea and comment on structure, while the work remains your own.
Should I take IB Maths AI SL or HL?
Choose AI HL if your planned degree uses substantial quantitative methods or a university you are considering asks for it; otherwise AI SL usually suits students who need applied mathematics alongside heavier commitments elsewhere. Requirements vary, so check each university's published entry requirements. Talking to your school about your combination of Higher Level subjects also helps balance the workload across the Diploma.
