Facts last verified:
Cambridge AS Level English General Paper is widely taken by A Level students, particularly in Pakistan and other Cambridge centres, to broaden their programme beyond specialist subjects. It suits anyone who wants to argue clearly in English about current issues, and the skills transfer directly to university writing, personal statements and interviews. Unlike most A Level subjects there is no set content to memorise, so performance depends on reading habits, general knowledge and writing practice.
Assessment is two papers, both taken in the same series and each worth half the AS Level. Paper 1 is a seventy-five-minute essay, chosen from ten questions spread across economic, social, scientific, technological, literary and artistic topics, with a recommended length of 600 to 700 words. Paper 2 is a comprehension paper of one hour forty-five minutes, with two sections based on unseen material, including a short persuasive response and questions on language and inference.
Students who write fluently at O Level or IGCSE are sometimes surprised by their first marks, because the essay rewards a sustained argument supported by relevant, specific examples rather than general opinion. Comprehension questions demand close reading, inference and careful use of the writer's own words where required. Our tutors build a bank of current examples for each topic area, teach quick essay planning and practise comprehension techniques with timed unseen passages.
