Which A Level boards do schools in the UK use?
AQA
Offers A Levels across the sciences, Mathematics (7357), Psychology, Sociology, Economics and many other subjects. AQA's private-candidate guidance points candidates to the JCQ centre list.
Pearson Edexcel
Offers UK A Levels such as Mathematics (9MA0) and Further Mathematics. These are different qualifications from Pearson Edexcel International A Levels, which are modular and taken mainly outside the UK.
OCR
Offers A Levels including Mathematics A (H240), Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science. Many schools mix boards, using OCR for one subject and AQA or Edexcel for another.
WJEC / Eduqas
WJEC sets qualifications for Wales and offers A Levels in England under the Eduqas brand. Northern Ireland's CCEA is also a JCQ member; tell us if your child takes CCEA or Welsh specifications.
When are A Level exams for students in the UK?
| Session | What applies in the UK |
|---|---|
| Summer series (May to June) | The only exam series for UK A Levels. In 2027, the common timetable runs from Monday 10 May to Tuesday 22 June, with Wednesday 23 June kept as a contingency day in case of national or significant local disruption. |
| Results in August | A Level results are released to centres on 11 August 2027 and to candidates on Thursday 12 August 2027. GCSE results follow on 19 August 2027. |
| Resits | Because UK A Levels are linear, a student who resits normally takes the subject's exams again in the following summer series. A passed science practical endorsement can be carried forward, even to a different board. |
Where do students in the UK sit A Level exams?
School and college students are entered by their own centre. A private candidate takes exams at an approved school or college without being enrolled there, for example a home-educated student or someone resitting after leaving school.
JCQ publishes a private-candidate centre finder that can be filtered by qualification, awarding body and subject. When checked on 1 October 2026, JCQ said 190 centres had confirmed they would accept private candidates that year, and the list is updated once a year, in December or January.
Private candidates make their own entries through the centre and pay its fees. AQA states that it is up to each school or college whether to accept private candidates, and that it cannot ask a centre to accept an entry.
Schools that accept a private candidate must be willing to supervise, authenticate and mark any non-exam assessment, including the A Level science practical endorsement. Confirm this with the centre before you enter for Biology, Chemistry, Physics or any subject with coursework.
Which exam board does my child's A Level use: AQA, OCR or Edexcel?
Each school chooses a board subject by subject, so a student can take AQA Chemistry, OCR Physics and Pearson Edexcel Mathematics at the same time. The specification code on the school's course information or the exam entry tells you which: for Mathematics, AQA is 7357, Pearson Edexcel is 9MA0 and OCR is H240.
The topics overlap, but the question styles, paper structure and mark schemes do not. That is why we match tutors to the board, and why past papers from a different board are only useful for extra practice once the student's own board's papers are exhausted.
Can a UK student take A Levels as a private candidate?
Yes. A private candidate finds an approved school or college willing to enter them, registers through that centre and pays its fees. JCQ's centre finder lists centres that have confirmed they accept private candidates, but each centre decides for itself and sets its own deadlines, so start looking early in the academic year.
Subjects with non-exam assessment need more planning. The centre must be willing to supervise and mark the work, and science A Levels require a practical endorsement, so check this before you enter. A student resitting Biology, Chemistry, Geology or Physics can ask to carry forward an earlier practical endorsement result, even if it came from a different board.
When are A Level exams and results in 2027?
The JCQ common timetable for summer 2027 starts on Monday 10 May and the final A Level exam is on Tuesday 22 June, with 23 June held as a contingency day. A Level results are released to students on Thursday 12 August 2027.
The JCQ deadline for entries is 21 February 2027, and individual papers are scheduled by each board within the common timetable. Check your board's final timetable once it is published, and plan revision so that each subject's last topics are finished before the Easter holiday.

What times are online A Level classes in the UK?
Students usually take A Levels in Year 12 and Year 13 (Lower and Upper Sixth). Schools set predicted grades for UCAS applications during Year 13, so autumn and spring of Year 13 are when tutoring has most effect on both the prediction and the final result.
Classes run in UK time. Clocks go back to GMT on 25 October 2026 and forward to BST on 28 March 2027, so the 2027 exams and results all fall in British Summer Time; families tutoring from abroad should check the time difference after each change.
Schools in England set their own term dates within a three-term year. The exam season starts in May, so the Easter holiday is usually the last long break for structured revision.

A Level questions from families in the UK
When is A Level results day 2027?
A Level results day 2027 is Thursday 12 August 2027, according to JCQ's published key dates. Schools and colleges receive results the day before, on 11 August, under restricted release. The summer 2027 exams run from 10 May to 22 June, and GCSE results follow a week after A Levels, on 19 August 2027.
Do you tutor AQA, OCR and Edexcel A Levels?
Yes, we tutor AQA, OCR and Pearson Edexcel A Levels, and WJEC Eduqas where we have a tutor for the subject. Tell us the specification code, such as 7357, H240 or 9MA0 for Mathematics, and we will match a tutor who knows that board's papers, command words and mark schemes rather than teaching generic A Level content.
Can I resit an A Level in the UK?
Yes, you can resit an A Level in the UK, normally in the next summer series, because UK A Levels are linear and are examined in the summer. If you have left school, you enter as a private candidate through a centre that accepts private candidates. Science students can usually carry forward a passed practical endorsement.
How do I find an exam centre as a private A Level candidate?
Start with the JCQ private-candidate centre finder, which you can filter by qualification, awarding body and subject. Then contact centres directly, because each one decides whether to accept you, sets its own fees and deadlines, and must agree to supervise any coursework or practical endorsement. Begin your search early in the academic year.
Is online A Level tutoring effective for UK students?
Yes, online A Level tutoring works well for most UK sixth-formers, because the work is mainly problem-solving, essay planning and past-paper practice that suits a shared screen. It also widens the choice of tutors who know your exact board. We teach online only, with no home visits, and parents can join any lesson.
What times are online A Level classes in the UK?
Online A Level classes usually run between about 4pm and 9pm on weekdays and from morning to early evening at weekends, in UK time. In the Easter holiday and during study leave we can offer longer daytime sessions. Slots depend on the subject and the tutor's availability, and we confirm them before the first lesson.
